i must say i'd find it difficult to resist opening a book with a title
like that. what kind of indians does america need, and why, according to
the author?

Presumably American Indians -- "Iktomi" is, if memory
serves, the Lakota word for the spider (or sometimes
coyote) "the trickster" -- the mythological/supernatural
being that delights in confounding people and generally
turning their perceptions upside-down. Some of the stories
about his interactions with humans are humorous, and
some are scary -- much like those about "the little people"
in Celtic/Pictic legends -- because they involve a total lack
(or an entirely alien concept) of morality. Kinda like a few of
the people who sell books on ebay, actually.

Indeed. The man writing as "Iktomi" more than once in the text alludes to
identifying himself with that entity.
