Map of Denmark
What a lovely plate!
thanks for sharing with us. Does "Zealand" have any relationship with "New Zealand" at all? "WebmasterGPFS" nobody@gpfs-onlineorg wrote in message ... By the way, if you are interested by an old map of Denmark, before the war of Schleswig-Holstein (1864), look at this one : http://www.gpfs-online.org/exchange/oldenmark.jpg This map is very usefull if you collect old postmarks from Denmark. At this time, Hambourg belonged to Denmark (it was the second town of the country!). Best regards, Michel A.E. Map of Denmark
I have established Zealand was a Dutch maritime province,
from whence New Zealand was a derivative. The Zealand shown on the map, the province in question? "Rod" wrote in message ... What a lovely plate! thanks for sharing with us. Does "Zealand" have any relationship with "New Zealand" at all? |

Yes, I managed to find a link to "the naming of NZ" and it is indeed, a can of worms for the scholars. "Rod" skrev i en meddelelse ... What a lovely plate! thanks for sharing with us. Does "Zealand" have any relationship with "New Zealand" at all? No. The original meaning of Zealand (or Zeeland) -- in Danish Sjælland -- is "the land of the seals". But, mind you, some scolars believe that it was the "land of the herrings" (in Danish: sild), and others that it was the "land of the lakes" (in Danish: sø, derived from old Norse: Sió). In the close vicinity of where I live, there is a lake called "Sjælsø". It couldn't possibly mean the "lake of the lakes", but rather the lake of the seals (in ancient times, that is!). Map of Denmark
Mette wrote: Hi Ralph, In that case you'll be surprised to learn that Denmark comprises some 700 (!) islands -- bigger or smaller, some only needleheads -- and that the only land boundary (with Germany) is only 68 km. http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/...os/da.html#Geo Thank you Mette for the information. I read all and I mean all of the data about Denmark. Very interesting. I can see why you love it. PS: The postfærge-stamps have winged their way to Florida today. Again, many thanks and what can I do for you in return? Ralphael, the OLD one |

Map of Denmark
My word!, and could you imagine the cost? (engraved)
We have a subdivison going up next door, and due to a deep sloping block, the fellow that put in the retaining walls needed to dig fairly deep holes with a spade, about a metre, drop slotted posts in, cement them in place, then slide the retaining panels down the post, a bit like Lego. He began at 7am and finished at 2pm, covered about 40-50 metres I suppose, his income for that day? $812 thank you very much They don't make them like that any more! ======================= Tracy Barber |

The same goes for the Austrian "leaf" sets of revenues. The engravings on them are classic Euro art and symbolism. To me, they are some of the nicest stamps ever printed. Map of Denmark

"Bill Sharpe" skrev i en meddelelse ... - snip - There are much more detailed maps of Denmark, e.g. the Michelin Scandinavian map, which we bought from Amazon for our recent vacation trip to Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland. Thank you Bill, I know that. But I am not inclined to buy a Michelin map only for scanning a small fragment of a fairly small island :-) I am looking for something I can have for free for the purpose, either online, or through our local library. I hope you had a nice trip, and did not get caught by the autumn-like weather we had here during the month of May. Unless, of course, Viktor Sten has a Michelin map or similar that he can scan for the purpose ;-) Mette Mette We enjoyed all four countries. In three weeks time, the only rain and fog we ran into was the day we sailed the Norwegian fjord. 93 degree heat in Stockholm one day was a bit unusual, but the locals seemed unconcerned. We stayed in Helsinki the last Saturday of our trip, just one block from the Finnish Postal Museum. Unfortunately, the museum closed at 4:30 pm and we didn't arrive until 5 pm. On Sunday we left at 6:30 am for the long plane ride home. Bill Bill |
