I'm not sure what your point is.

And mailing lists aren't newsgroups, so saying "rcs was a mailing list"
makes no sense.

The rcs RFD (1993 version) mentions the mailing list, it was just called
the stamps list. You should read it, it might surprise you to see who's
name is on it. ;-)

Hi All

Thank you for all your efforts to trace STL back to its origin,
but it also looks like a missed anniversary.

It looks as the list have eksisted since 1991/92
perhaps with the name The Stamp List.

I'm still interested in any information on the origins of
the Stamp Trader List. before it is lost for good.

Not quite. The "stamps list" was not the same as the STL -- it was just
an email-based "discussion" group that rcs (later rcsd) "replaced."

As others have said, Nancy Rabel Hall was the original keeper of the
STL. If you can figure out how to contact her she probably has the best
idea of when it started.

Found this on Google (no idea if it is really relevant):

"Personal

and science fiction models, collecting stamps, playing the piano, and
collecting trading and customizable card games (i.e., Magic, Star Trek,
Babylon 5). ..."

Well, I tracked it down and saw the name. I see also the mention of a
possible gateway between the mailing list and the newsgroup, which I
recall actually being in existance. Do you remember how long that
continued?

P.S. I see that there were earlier attempts to create r.c.s in 1990 and
1991. The RFD for the latter was from the same person as was 1993 RFD.

Hello Hans --
A little search in my back-issues file provided this information:

The April 1996 issue (#28) of "The Compulatelist," published by the
Philatelic Computing Study Group, contains an article on the Stamp
Trader List written by Phil Guptill. It explains how he got involved
with it during his first foray into cyberspace on Valentine's Day,
1995 with a used 386 and a freenet account provided by Arizona State
University. He found the rec.collecting.stamps newsgroup, and read the
post by Nancy Rabal Hall, then the caretaker of STL.

He wrote, "She said she was looking for someone to succeed her as
custodian of the list. Nancy took it on in about 1992 from the
originator of the list at a time when it appeared on rec.collecting, a
couple of years before the appearance of r.c.s. Increased work
requirements indicated that she pass the torch."

Phil's first e-mail on the Internet was to Nancy, offering his
services. Her last posting of the STL was on 11 April 1995. It listed
138 subscribers in 23 countries. His first post of STL on r.c.s. was
on about 01 May 1995. There is no information in Phil's article about
who might have started posting it on the rec.collecting newsgroup, or
exactly when, but it appears to have been started in about 1990 or
1991.

As far as coming anniversaries are concerned, Ed Jackson reported on
the start of rec.collecting.stamps as a separate newsgroup in the
January 1994 issue (#19). In that he gives the start date for r.c.s.
as a separate Usenet newsgroup as 10 Jan 1994.

Hope this information is useful

I have looked into this on Google and found some more information.
Tracing the list history backwards, the following shows who ran the
list and when:

Nancy Rabel Hall announced on rec.collecting on 8 October 1993 that
she had taken over the Stamp Trader List from Kai Rudloff.
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...&output=gplain

Kai Rudloff posted his last trader list on 24 September 1993:
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...&output=gplain

The first time Kai posted the list appears to be 9 August 1991:
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...&output=gplain

Kai announced on 1 August 1991 that he would take over the list due to
the absence of its previous compiler, Tilo Levante:
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...&output=gplain

Tilo posted the list (apparently for the first time) on 24 April 1991:
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...&output=gplain

Tilo proposed the list on 15 April 1991:
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...&output=gplain

rec.collecting itself passed its vote 9 March 1991 and was apparently
created 15 March 1991.

Therefore, it appears that Tilo Levante deserves credit for creating
the trader list.
