Gold certificates
Gold certificates (ended in 1933)
This US currency was backed by gold. Only as many Gold Certificates could be printed as there was gold to match it. The US government received the Gold Certificates when they were printed by the Treasury (printing currency is also called issuing currency). Gold Certificates were redeemable in gold on demand. At the top of the bill is printed the words "Gold Certificate". |
