Default Announcement: San Diego Open Air Book Fair

The Hillcrest Book Fair and Festival will be held THIS SUNDAY, June
11, in San Diego, from 10 am to 5 pm, and I would like to invite
everyone in Southern California to attend.

The Book Fair will have approximately 50 booths of book sellers, many
who sell only on the Internet, and this will be a rare opportunity to
view their inventory. There will also staged readings, author readings
and signings, a children's area, and story telling.

If you have attended in the past, you may not know that it was moved a
few years ago, and even those who attended recently will find that it
has been relocated just one block south from last year's spot. The
book fair will still be on Fifth Avenue, but between Robinson Avenue
and Pennsylvania Avenue.

Here is a link to a Yahoo map that gives the location of the book fair
and you can use it for driving directions:

http://maps.yahoo.com/maps.py?&addr=3737+5th+Ave&csz=San+Diego,CA

The official site for the book fair can be found at:

http://www.hillcrestassociation.com/bookfair.html

The book fair is a free event, but parking can be difficult. Since the
book fair is on Sunday, you can park at any metered location on the
street all day for free. Usually neighborhood parking is available,
leaving you only a short walk to the book fair. There are several pay
lots in the area.

Hillcrest is in central San Diego and has many fine shops (including
three used book stores) and restaurants within a few minutes walk.
Balboa Park and it's San Diego Zoo and other museums and gardens is
only a few miles away. June weather in San Diego can be unpredictable,
but I would expect cool overcast weather in the morning, perhaps with
some misting, but usually bright sun in the afternoon.

A journey to San Diego to enjoy the book fair, the park, and Hillcrest
would be a fun day trip for the entire family!

Went there once. It's about twelve miles from my house. I found the
books very ordinary and the prices extraordinary. I do go to the
Californian International Antiquarian Book Fair. In odd years, It
merely involves a flight to Oakland, a BART trip to S.F., a walk to
the St. Francis and a harrowing taxi ride to the show. At that point, I
have only invested a thousand dollars and change (big change). That is
worth it. The Hillcrest Book Fair is nor worth it.

Hillcrest is a delight. There are three very nice bookstores and good
(not fine) dining. Best sashimi is om Fifth and University.

Balboa Park is the best.

Just don't waste your time on the bookshow
