Default Card Woes

I've said it many times before, but I'll repeat it as this group tries to,
umm, re-group...

The massive onslaught by the manufacturers has caused all new cards to lose
their identity. Every year there are millions of different cards printed,
and about a dozen get any identity, and then within a year even they are
forgotten. One of the manufacturers needs to step forward and produce the
annual DEFINITIVE SET, that has all of the wonderful qualities of the cards
from 1960-1970. 700-800 cards, one or two inserts that are NOT regular
cards (i.e. booklets, stickers, decals, etc), white borders, color-coded
team names, action poses and close-ups (NOT game-action shots, which are
terribly impersonal), put out in a few series with the FIRST series coming
out in March (NOT November of the previous years) so that at least most of
the players are on the right team, etc.

Topps is really the only existing company in a position to do this because
of their heritage (no pun intended), but they probably don't have the stones
for taking the risk of producing only ONE set, even though it would become
THE set that everyone would want to have. They have the right idea with the
Heritage set, except its so ridiculous that they are copying their own
previous designs rather than just maintaining those characterstics in a new
set. Another possibility would be that a new manufacturer step into the ring
and produce this type of set.

OK, carry on...
