I love the cartoons on some of these cards!!

This one says "He got a lot of bad breaks during
the 1960 campaign".

Really, the only bad break he got was being
traded to the hapless Phillies during the off
season. Philadelphia finished with a 59-95
record in 1960, which put them in last place,
36 games out.

John was the losing pitcher, on September 16th,
when 39 year old Warren Spahn threw his first
no-hitter. John pitched 8 innings and allowed 4
runs.

Unfortunately, 1961 didn't bode too well for John
and the Phillies either. The Phillies finished with
a 47-107 record, 46 games out of first. John's
record was 6-18, and his ERA slipped above 4
for the only time in his 10 year career, at 4.07.

John came up with the Cubs in 1958, played for
the Phillies in 1960 and 1961, for the White Sox
from 1962 into 1967, and for Houston in 1967
and 1968.

His lifetime ERA was 3.67.

I did want to add that on August 20, 1961, John
was the winning pitcher against the Milwaukee
Braves, which broke a 23 game Philadelphia
losing streak!!
