New "ANA journal" kind of expensive
The ANA is coming out with a scholarly journal on a quarterly basis at
a subscription rate of around $65.95 per year and a single issue available for $16.95 The first issue is 52 pages. At that price it had better be good and not filled with a bunch of ads. I'm sure this is in response to complaints that the monthly "Numismatist" is too oriented to beginners and does not cover topics in depth. |

New "ANA journal" kind of expensive
Those people who WANT to read the articles printed in the ANA Journal
will find the means to get it. Obviously, the ANA knows this group is a small minority of the membership, maybe 1,000. In order to cover some of the expenses associated with publishing this material, the price must be higher than a few dollars. People will pay whatever it takes IF they perceive the value they get is worth it. Those of us who aren't really interested in this kind of material will pay $0 for it. Steve |

I do not know if they are going to maintain the connection between this journal and the Maynard Sundman Lectures, but the first volumne contains these essays. Great Collectors and Their Collections | Q. DAVID BOWERS 73 Years of National Bank Currency | PETER HUNTOON, PH.D. Image and Republican Sovereignty | DOUGLAS MUDD History of Die Making in the U.S. | CHRISTOPHER PILLIOD The Dark Side of Antebellum Banking | WENDELL WOLKA They are asking for ORIGINAL research and much of this seems to be more of what people already want to read even more of. However, give this quarterly a year or two and it is likely to be the kind of thing that those not interested now will regret not reading. I have often pointed out that LITERATURE DRIVES PRICES. Without the literature, the 1804 Dollars would be $10,000 novodels, just curios at best. At the more mundane level, goto the ANS Library database and enter 'SEATED QUARTER" and you will see the varieties that collectors are paying top dollar for _now_ touted decades ago to people who read the Gobrecht back when nobody cared about Seated Quarters. The ANA Journal could easily end up creating several new markets in the next ten years. You could wait ten years and buy then, or you can subscribe now. It all depends on what kind of collector you are. Most collectors are content to follow the herd, and that is fine. For those who know a $70 investment when they one, the ANA Journal is the knowledge of tomorrow, available today. |
