New South Wales "Laureate" series
I'm just going over my write-up for the "Laureate" series of New South
Wales and would be grateful for some clarification. According to Stanley Gibbons (1999) the series was designed by A.W. Manning (from a sketch by W.T. Levine). According to Seven Seas Stamps "The Australian Colonies Stamp Catalogue", the series was designed by J.H. Manning. Can anyone shed any light on this apparent difference? All the best, Bob Watson |

All the best, Bob Watson It is certainly very confusing, and I have found another odd "fact"... In my SG Commonwealth Cat.: The 1854 Square imperf. issues are noted as being designed by E.H.Corbould after sketches by...." T.W.LEVINGE " (who)?! Could these just be un-corrected printing errors? Perhaps Rodney can enlighten us! David. |

Alas, No David.
Not at the moment. I only have in-depth info on Western Australia and the rest of the continent since Federation (1900) I confirm the query of Mr.Watson, I have checked SG, Seven Seas and Comprehensive Catalogues all are as quoted in the original post. I think, however you may have made a mistake on your query. the TW Levinge issue was only the 1860 5 shilling purple. not the 1854 issues. I am due to return a SG ref book today at the Library so I shall check on any info from Brusden-White. G'day David,
I checked all the Library's offerings. No luck, Brusden-White is only from Federation and the latest Gibbons et al reveal no change, in fact Seven Seas have broken their latest into 2 editions and it seems they are not including early colonies. Rgds |

According to my SG catalogue, it is just the 6d and 1/- "Large Diadems"
that were designed by | E.H.Corbould after sketches by...." T.W.LEVINGE " (who)?! The very similar 5d and 8d are unaccredited. Meanwhile, according to the Seven Seas catalogue, the 5/- coin was "designed by T.H. Levinge, drawn by E.H. Corbould, and engraved by Frederick Heath" Does anyone know anything about any of these characters? Unless someone knows better, I will take it that: W.T. Levine, T.H.Levinge and T.W.Levinge are one and the same guy who didn't sign/write his name very clearly. I will also take it that whatever his name, he was E.H. Corbould's boss and maybe in charge of the NSW Post Office at that time. Actually, I think I will call him T.W. Levine based on the fact that I couldn't find any Levinges in the phone book, but lots of Levines. Hey, this research business is fun! All the best, Bob Watson Fun? It soon develops into a major headache, with all the 'misprints' etc.. in books and on the stamps too! David ;-)) |

If you do a web search via Google on "Levinge" and "new south wales", you will come up with a number of matches. I think that the spelling "Levinge" is quite likely to be the correct one. = Eric |
