Added an interesting item to my collection
Among an unreasonable number and mostly unaffordable amount of other stuff,
I also collect Austrian medals. I just won one this evening and look forward to adding it to my collection. http://austriancoins.com/Auction/Hujer.jpg L. Hujer is one of my favorites and although this may not be considered one of his finest efforts, I am thrilled to win it. I have a page about him if anyone is interested. http://www.austriancoins.com/Hujer.html This is only the fifth item of his I have been fortunate enough to acquire. He made hundreds! The front shows Franz Josef the Kaiser of Austria and that is the extent of my knowledge. Sorry, I can't tell anything more about it as I haven't had a chance to do any research. But I had to show it off :-) I hate to admit it...............but I could sell all my coins and concentrate solely on such items. Not ready to do that just yet however. :-) Dale Hallmark ANA 200710 WINS 471 |

But I had to show it off :-) Nice medal, yes, especially the female side :-) As for why it was made, well, in 1908 Franz Joseph "of Austria, etc." (not my words but those on the medal ...) had his 60-year jubilee as emperor. And on that occasion, that numismatic society (Österreichische Gesellschaft für Münz- und Medaillenkunde) apparently had a jubilee exhibition (Jubiläumsausstellung) in Vienna (Wien, Künstlerhaus) which this medal commemorates. And now, back to coins. gd&r Christian |

Were there any coins issued depicting Bismarck around 1888? Was the social security system put in place in Germany around that time? 1888 was the year of the three emperors in Germany - Wilhelm I, Friedrich III, and Wilhelm II - and the latter fired Bismarck two years later. But yes, the late 1880s were also the time when the fundaments of the social security system were laid. As for Bismarck on a German coin, there is no such thing. Lots of medals, yes. But in the years of the monarchy (-1918) only royals, princes and such could be honored on coins. And later ... well, he certainly was and is a quite controversial politician. However, that also applies to others who, unlike Bismarck, were honored by commemorative coins. Christian |

Dale,
It is interesting that you mention these items, because I have had what I believe to be an Austrian Token/Medal in my damaged coins bag for a while now. It has had the pleasure of being drilled through the centre. The token depicts "Franz Joseph I.V.G.G. Kaiser V. Oesterreich" on one side with the name? "Tautenhayn" below the portrait. On the reverse I can make out the letters "DER TAP... (Hole)..... KEIT", if it is of any interest to you (although damaged), let me know and I will throw it an envelope and send it across the pond to you. If it is scrap I ill return it to the "Lost souls bag". Thanks Colin "Dale Hallmark" wrote in message ... Among an unreasonable number and mostly unaffordable amount of other stuff, I also collect Austrian medals. I would be interested in seeing it. My personal opinion is if they are damaged they
are not worth anything. Others may disagree. Tautenhayn, Josef Hermann, born Vienna, May 5, 1837, died Vienna, April 1, 1911 Tautenhayn, Josef (junior) (1868-?) (note from newspaper: was 90 in 1958) Dale "Colin" wrote in message ... Dale,
Sorry for the delay, my ISP was carrying out maintenance which prevented me uploading the pics. The images below show the item in question, I agree with your comment that holed coins are not worth anything, however they may still provide interest/reference for someone. If you are interested in the medal in any way shape or form let me know and I will pop it in the post to you free of charge. I feel it may be happier with someone who will have interest in it than sitting in my rejects bag. http://www.saddler.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/photo.html Thanks Colin I would be interested in seeing it.
