Default Anti-FAQ alert

Usually, the best of these come from eBay:

http://pages.prodigy.net/kris.baker/...s/antifaq.html

But I just found one on ABE. Of course, ABE has its share of lousy
information, but it's usually not so humorously phrased.

A listing for a first of Arturo Perez-Reverte's THE FENCING MASTER
includes this gem:

"Chronologically, author's 1st book."

As opposed to spiritually, financially, by gross weight, etc., etc.?!?!

Of course, it's not just funny; it's wrong. APR's first book was EL
HUSAR (Madrid, 1986):

As opposed to "in order of appearance in English translation." THE
FENCING MASTER (originally issued as El Maestro de Esgrima, in 1988) was
the fourth of Perez-Reverte's books to be published in English, in 1999,
although it is, so far, the earliest of his books to appear in English.
The first to appear in English was his third book, THE FLANDERS PANEL
(1994; originally issued in 1990 as La Tabla de Flandes).

True.

Yes, of course, but all those designations--first written, first
published, first translated, first hardcover original under the
author's own name (e.g., Dean Koontz's HANGING ON), etc.--are measured
chronologically. One could say an author's book was "first in the
hearts of his readers" or "first on the Modern Library 100" or "first
in a list of the author's biggest sellers." But in the context of a
catalog description, to write "Chronologically, the author's first
[whatever] book" is redundant--and thus humorous.
