Book Sale Find - North American History
The novel Black Robe by Brian Moore (and, yes, the movie,
too) inspired me to do some research, from which I learned that the Jesuits in Canada were fanatical reporters, sending annual Relations back to their superiors in France, telling them everything that happened that year. While I have still to come across a printed set of these reports, I found yesterday the next best thing: a four volume set of _Pioneer Priests of North America, 1642 - 1710_ , by Rev. T. J. Campbell, S.J. of Fordham University, published from 1908 to 1916 (first printing of each volume and yes it has been reprinted periodically) and all in very good condition. The first volume is sort of a summary to the other three, which are arranged as follows: vol. 1 - Among the Iroquois; vol. 2 - Among the Hurons; vol. 3 - Among the Algonquins. In addition to the Relations, the author relies on Parkman, Winsor and numerous other authorities, but cites to Parkman more often than to the others. -- Francis A. Miniter Mesure is Medicine þauh þou muche ȝeor[n]e. Al nis not good to þe gost þat þe bodi lykeþ, Ne lyflode to þe licam þat leof is to þe soule. The single likeliest source in English is books published by the Champlain Society, a patriotic/historical society founded 1905. Google searches suggest that its early publications were as highly redacted as Fr. Campbell's. The Canadian Encyclopedia tells us " the Jesuit Relations were avidly and widely read in the 18th century, along with the works of Cartier and Champlain, as exciting travel literature. Reuben Gold Thwaites edited 73 volumes as The Jesuit Relations and Allied Documents, Travels and Explorations of the Jesuit Missionaries in New France 1610-1791 (1896-1901), presenting annotated parallel versions of his translations and the French, Latin and Italian original texts." -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Thank you. As a result of your information,I found them on AddAll.com, for about $7,500 for all 73 volumes, or individually on sale for an average of $100 each volume. I guess I had better wait for some scholar to die and his family to hold an estate sale. -- Francis A. Miniter Mesure is Medicine þauh þou muche ȝeor[n]e. I ask because Athanasius Kircher used Jesuit reports in his "Musurgia Universalis" (1650), which includes arrangements of Christian hymns from Armenian and Arabic traditions. You might see it as the first stirring of the idea of "world music". ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- e m a i l : j a c k @ c a m p i n . m e . u k Jack Campin, 11 Third Street, Newtongrange, Midlothian EH22 4PU, Scotland mobile 07800 739 557 http://www.campin.me.uk Twitter: JackCampin |
