Spain - Silver Certificates
Does anyone have any background info on the 5 and 10 Peseta notes issued by the
Bank of Spain in 1935/36? These notes were designated as 'silver certificates' but I don't know why. As far as I know these were the only two denominations that ever received this designation. |

I would guess it has something to do with the Spanish civil war that was raging at that time and its effect on the economy. |

Good call.
I assume then that, due to the war certain coinage was withdrawn and replaced with notes. It's probably also reasonable to assume that 5 and 10 peseta coins in circulation just prior to 1935 were silver. Does anyone know for certain? I've been looking at few coin dealer websites for further info but haven't found anything so far. |

Hello all.
After some delay (no excuse for it), here are the results of my little research. In the begininig of the 30's, there was a important coin in spain, the 5 pesetas or "duro". It was a silver coin, very appreciated because its value. Due to the crisis (international crisis and spanish crisis indeed), the Central Bank of Spain (Banco de España) should print this notes as "Silver certificate" to give some confidence to the people about the economy. Those notes were as much value as silver, not only the circulating "pesetas". This is the information I have about the "5 pesetas" note. Printed in 1935 by Bradbury Wilkinson in London. It had in the fron a lady with a wall crown (in this time Spain was a republic, so Royal Crowns were forbidden). In the back, some geometrical designs. The bill is 110 x 70 mm and printed in red. I think it is not much information, but I'm just a small collector and not a good numismatic. I hope it helps!!! "CrispUNC" escribió en el mensaje ...
