Default Weeda Stamps Bidboard Auction, closing July 26, 2003

WEEDA STAMPS (VANCOUVER) WEEKLY BIDBOARD AUCTION
Closing 12:30 p.m., Saturday, July 26, 2003

Every week, Weeda Stamps* of Vancouver, British Columbia offers 150 lots of
Canada and worldwide stamps, postal history, collections, and accumulations
in its bidboard auction. I help out the owner, Beverly Fox, by listing some
highlights from her auctions here on r.c.s.m.

Last week I picked three Canada lots, and this week it looks like Canada is
again the main featu

Lot #4 http://www.weeda.com/stampimages/4.jpg -- Canada #20. F/VF used
1864 2c rose. Gorgeous deep colour and cancelled in year of issue with
Hamilton CDS!

I have always liked used stamps more than mint stamps. If cost isn't an
issue, any collector can assemble a beautiful collection of mint stamps.
Choice used stamps, however, are a lot harder to come by, and when they are
classics like this one, they are unique.

Lot #12 http://www.weeda.com/stampimages/12.jpg -- Canada #61. Mint hinged
1897 $1 Jubilee. An unfortunate small thin. The stamp looks wonderful,
brilliant colour and great centering.

Like most collectors, I generally avoid damaged stamps, but it makes sense
to include them in my collection a) when I can't possibly afford a sound
specimen, and b) when the damage isn't visible from the front and the stamp
has everything else going for it. I would much rather have a great-looking
stamp in my album than no stamp at all! (I never, ever buy stamps that I
don't like. If I collected mint Canada, I would be bidding on this one!)

Lot #23 http://www.weeda.com/stampimages/23.jpg -- Canada #226, 261. Two
purple 50c stamps, both VF MNH. One 1935 Victoria Parliament Building issue
and the other the 50c Munitions Factory from the War Issue. These are choice
copies of two great Canadian stamps.

The Munitions Factory stamp was the springboard that got me into reading a
remarkable wartime trilogy by George E. Blackburn -- Where the Hell are the
Guns, The Guns of Normandy, and The Guns of Victory. Blackburn was a
Canadian artillery officer, a "FOO" (Forward Observation Officer) who
experienced the Second World War from its beginnings through the very end.
The stamp, which shows a nearly completed 25-pound field gun in a Canadian
factory, the same type of gun that Blackburn worked with, is an incredible
example of the art of recess engraving; see a detailed image of a small part
of the stamp at http://www.ingraham.ca/bob/munitionscompare.gif.

(Note: George Blackburn's books are in print and are commonly available in
both new and used bookstores.)

Except for large items such as collections, box lots and accumulations, most
of Weeda's auction lots are illustrated. For the full list, as well as
prices realized in the previous four auctions, go to the Weeda Stamps web
site at http://www.weeda.com. BIDS, IN CANADIAN DOLLARS, CAN BE PLACED IN
PERSON, BY TELEPHONE, OR ON-LINE UNTIL 12:30 P.M. PDT ON SATURDAY, JULY 26.

A note about "prices realized": Only rarely does bidding in philatelic
auctions reach the estimated values. If you study the listings and the
prices realized, you'll see that bargains are waiting for any collector. It
is common for expensive and even rare stamps, covers and other philatelic
items to sell in auctions for as little as 10% or 20% of the estimate.

Even if you won't be bidding, check out these other features on the Weeda
web site:

-- The Dutch Auction http://www.weeda.com/dutch.cfm

-- Beverly's Best Buys http://www.weeda.com/classifieds.cfm

-- The Fox Tales Newsletter http://www.weeda.com/news.cfm

Need a clock? Look at the antique clocks that Beverly is advertising for one
of her customers: http://www.weeda.com/details.cfm?id=301. One is an
Ingraham clock! No relation, unfortunately!
