"The "Delco-Bose" (actually Blaupunkt) cassette deck that came with my
'92 Cadillac had conquered all those earlier technical problems...it
was a GREAT sounding deck, for a car. The stock Delco deck that came
in my wife's Camaro (a truly ****ty car, typical for ****-rolet Motor
Division) was good...not great, but good...FAR better than what was
available back when 8 track and cassette were competing. I had a
couple of Alpines which were pretty darned good, too, outpacing any 8
track deck ever made. The CLOSEST 8 track made it to comparable
fidelity seemed to be the Sanyo "AudioSpec" decks, and they didn't
even have Dolby "B." To think of it, I can't remember ANY 8 track car
decks ever having Dolby "B".

However, 8 track DID have those advantages of higher tape speed, which
had the potential (never really realized in cars) for better top end,
and it certainly gave flatter bass. The geometrical problems of tape
running a 1 7/8 IPS precludes any seriously reliable bass response
without comprehensive correction circuitry, and even then,
self-erasure in the record process (at real time speed) is always
going to be there. 8 track, due its higher tape speed, didn't suffer
in this region as cassettes still do."

attention D-Bob, you obviously never heard one of these Pioneer car
decks- I bought one new in 1979, and still have it- published response
range right in the manual to 15khz on the top end...it SOUNDS, dude...

it will blow the doors off any cassette deck with ease.
