Does anyone know of any site or listing of the stamp designs of Jennifer
Toombs? A book was produced about 20 years ago on her work titled
Toombsiana Topics but I have been unable to track down a copy. Was there
ever a study group based on her designs?
Any help will be most appreciated.

Rob:

Eric Waldock, of Malden, Essex, was the author. He passed away a
couple
of years ago, so it may be a scarce publication to come by today.

His collection was sold by Bonhams at their sale #11720 - Stamps and
Covers
of the World, on 15 Feb 2005 at Knightsbridge. It was Lot No: 124

Toombsiana:
The comprehensive and unique collection of Jennifer Toombs material
formed
by the late Eric Waldock in albums, box files, folders and loose
contained in
six cartons inc. thirty three albums with issues for G.B., Jersey,
Guernsey,
Isle of Man, West Indian and Pacific Islands, f.d.c's, inc. a series
of Benham
hand painted and signed covers, commemorative sets, omnibus issues,
presentation packs, miniature sheets, covers and cards with many
items
signed by Jennifer Toombs.

Also a further six cartons containing Eric Waldock's working notes and
rough
proofs of "Toombsiana" the catalogue listing all of the postage stamps
and
associated material designed by Miss Toombs, magazine articles,
cuttings,
journals, typed copies of "The Pitcairn Journal" and "The St. Kitts-
Nevis
Odyssey" the account of her travels on the islands.

A quantity of original pencil and water colour sketches for unadopted
and
adopted stamp or cover designs, tracings and thumb nail roughs with
the
majority being signed, also a further range of mainly black and white
photo-copied original designs and artwork. (1000's‡)

The collection sold for £2,600 plus Premium and tax

The Stanley Gibbons Stamp Catalogue, would do
it Rob, albeit a little work involved.
Blair has offered her Country work.

I have snippets, photos etc
spread over 10 years of "Stamp News"
would take some extraction, but if you
are doing a study, I'd dig them out for you.

Another avenue is the circa 1977 "Seven Seas"
stamp catalogue, which are a mine of info,
colour plates with designer info, I may have a spare
copy, if you care to send duplicate stamps to cover
postage.

IIRC she is the designer of the Pitcairn "burning stamps" issue.
Rod.

It would be interesting to also uncover
her underground label designs, no doubt
you are aware of.

She may have designed these:
An old Viking name "Skilda" meaning "shields."

She designed a ship set, including
a Viking longship for Herm Island as well.

Her Jersey set is 15 in number to 2002
from the Jersey Bulletin 2002
http://cjoint.com/data/jdoolOw6HG.htm

In 1987 she designed some very nice Viking stamps
comm 900th death anniv of William the conqueror.

It shows the Viking King Rollo (not known Danish or
Norwegian) receiving land around
the mouth of the River Seine in 911, he was given
Rouen and surrounding countryside, (as protection
against other Vikings)
The land later became Normandy (land of the Northmen)
Rollo possibly became baptised, and this became
the basis of the Duchy of Normandy.

a really neat stamp fro a set I have yet
to find.

A simple goodle-search states that Rollo was Norwegian,
maybe also the "founding father" of the Scottish Sinclairs, see

Hello Mette,
It was your stamp pages that inspired me to read,
and what a marvelous journey, it has been.

My references were taken from Rosedahl
Professor in Medieval Archaeology, University of Athus,
Denmark. also Special Professor in Viking studies
in Nottingham University.

Here is what she said in 1990.

The chieftain Rollo and his descendants consolidated their
power and extended their dominions in Normandy, a feat
unmatched by other chieftains in Western Europe, and many
Scandinavians settled in this rich and fertile country. Legends
about the early rulers were written in the early eleventh century
by the priest Dudo, but there are few facts. It is not even known
whether Rollo was of Danish or Norwegian origin - the
question has given rise to considerable debate. Dudo says he
was Danish, but later Norwegian-Icelandic literature claims he
was the son of the Norwegian Earl Rognvald of M0re, who was
also the ancestor of the earls of Orkney. The name of Rollo's
daughter, Geirlaug, has also contributed to the debate. It was
thought to be a Norwegian name but recent research indicates it
was Common Norse. This destroys the most important
argument for Rollo being of Norwegian origin.

William the conqueror thus conceivably be Danish Rod.

If you are in the London area on Saturday 16 April 2011 there is a meeting of the Guild of St Gabriel at St Wilfred's Convent, 29 Tite Street, Chelsea 1.30 for 2.00. You would be very welcome as a guest. The speaker is Jennifer Toombs
