Can anyone tell me where I can buy a reasonably modern English Language
Catalog of Japan Stamps please. I am not looking for anything particularly specialised and colour illustrations would be nice. Thanks in advance Bob |

Thanks in advance Bob The FAQ (http://www.stampfaq.org/) lists two catalogs: Sakura and Japan Stamp Dealers Association. Not to mention Scott, Gibbons, Michel, etc. Search for "sakura stamp catalog" on Google to find a dealer selling them. -- Kaleb S. KEITHLEY |

KEITHLEY I looked at a recent Sakura catalogue a few weeks ago, hoping it would help me sort out the pre-war, wartime, and post-war definitives, but there was so little English that it just was not useful. But I admit that I didn't study it thoroughly; perhaps there is more English translation than I found in the admittedly few number of pages I looked at. I'll try to take another look. Bob |

Thanks Guys,
I did see the Sakura catalog on the Japan P. S. site but it said only that the stamp titles were in English and although it was priced at what seems a very reasonable 640 yen if I recall correctly, I could not find a way of buying it. I will keep looking. Bob "Bob Ingraham" wrote in message ... Bob Ingraham wrote: Can anyone tell me where I can buy a reasonably modern English Language Catalog of Japan Stamps please. Thanks in advance Bob The lastest Stanley Gibbons catalog for Japan [& Korea] was issued in 1997. I would expect them to issue a new edition soon, but they do not have it on their list of upcoming publications (which runs through 2004). Also, I am pretty sure that this catalog is not in color. You can order this from a number of on-line stamp dealers, as well as from SG themselves http://www.stanleygibbons.com/. = Eric |

It is a very much comprehensive catalogue, 100% in english of course, black and white only, A5 size (half the size of a letter page, very handy). Title : "SG stamp catalogue : Part 18 : Japan and Korea". Pages 1 to 169 : Japan , including Japan, lottery prize miniature sheets, stamps booklets, prefecture stamps, british P.O. in Japan, French P.O. in Japan, U.S. P.O. in Japan, British Commonwealth Occupation forces in Japan, japanese P.O. in China, Ryukyu islands, with a few words to remember the History at the beginning of each chapter. Then pages 170 to 410 : Korea including, Korean Empire, Chinese P.O. in Korea, Japanese P.O. in Korea, South Korea, stamps booklets, North Korean occupation of South Korea, Indian custodian forces in Korea, North Korea. Price : £22.50 + postage fees I bought it some months ago at the SG website (with a VISA card number), and was very satisfied with the prompt delivery (2 or 3 days later - I live in Europe). I would very much recommend such a catalogue. Happy collecting, I would add that I bought several catalogs directly from them last year and found the process pretty painless and the cost, including shipping to the US, comparable to ordering through a US dealer. The shipping was a bit slow, as it went by surface M-bag. = Eric |

I am not sure that the UK offers a m-bag service but I am sure someone will prove me wrong. For those who have no idea what we are talking about m-bag arrives in your own mail bag/sack Dick I've still have the UK M-bag that the catalogs came in. That seems to indicate that they do. I had never heard of it before I received this shipment. The US and German also offer M-bag service. For those who don't know, a M-bag is a bag of printed matter sent to a single address in a foreign country. The one that I received had the enclosed catalogs in a protective box. The US M-bag service also allows this, although some USPS clerks don't seem to think so. = Eric |
