Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it Col E.H. (?) Green that placed
the newspaper ad after he bought all of the know copies?

No, I believe it was Brown that placed the ad.

Green once owned all 5 of the coins, I believe bought
from Brown.

Years later Max Mehl ran his famous $50 for a 1913
Liberty nickel ads that sold many Rare Coin Encyclopedia booklets and
greatly helped bring awareness of coin
collecting to the masses.

Yes, I think you are right, my error. A fairly interesting tale of
long ago though.

No, I believe it was Brown that placed the ad.

It is thought that the ads placed by Brown were part of his ruse to
conceal the illegal striking that took place while he was at the US
Mint.

He waited until the statute of limitations expired, then advertised for
the coins, all as part of his plan to present them as coins discovered
in circulation instead of illegally struck by "the midnight minter."

Regards,
Tom
