Default How to tell Montblanc Replicas?

I was wondering if anyone here could tell me of a surefire way to tell if a
pen is a real Montblanc or a replica? I just bought one that just doesn't
feel right. It has a Montblanc "refill" bp ink insert but I don't know if
that means anything. I figure they probably print refill on all their ink
inserts.

Mont Blanc has been opening stores in some of the upscale malls.
Perhaps there's one near you and you could take it in.

Or you could try calling Mont Blanc and ask what to look for.

Or... If you drop it on the sidewalk and it doesn't break,
it's a replica. ;0)

If it's on eBay, it's a fake.

You'll be wrong maybe 1% of the time.

I have the cap and body here of a friend's "Mont Blanc" that was
bought in a posh shop for serious money, but the lousy nib fell apart
in no time - I assume it's fake, as the cap edge hasn't cracked yet.
I also have a Parker 51 with a missing cap jewel.

As the 51 is the best mass-market pen ever made, and the only reason
for using a MB is that the white star impresses those who know a tiny
amount about pens, then I'm thinking of A Cunning Plan. 8-)

I could suggest a website, where they compare real Montblanc pens and
fakes. Unfortunately it is in German, but I am sure the Owner speaks
English as well. So you might contact him.

http://www.fountainpen.de

As you mention a rollerball pen, this link leads to a pdf-file which
compares Masterpieces originals and fakes with some photos.

Hope that helps,

I have bought and sold numerous Montblanc pens on eBay. While the majority
of sellers are decent people who are offering authentic pens, there are many
sellers peddling fakes. There are a few features (that I have been able to
recognize) that often distinguish the fake pens. If buying on eBay always
begin by looking at the language in the discription - does the seller offer
a return option? Are "all sales final"? As with any eBay purchase,
carefully evaluate the feedback remarks.
If you have a specific pen you are considering, I would be happy to look at
a photo of it. Depending on the model, I may be able to give you a few
features to look for.

Respond by e-mail if interested.

Ah, but caveat, good Sir Dingley, caveat! Hath you observed not the
outcome of Cunning Plans? Hath there even a single one that was
fruitful? ;-)

But the noble turnip is not a fruit.

As in the end, they are all overpriced and not worth a fraction of what us
fools pay for them.

With re. the op, if you could provide more detail or at least some pictures
then it would be helpful. Depending on the model of the pen there are
various ways of telling authentic from fake, however as time goes on the
fakes get a little better and discerning between the two gets more
difficult.

Any more info you could provide would be appreciated, thanks

The nib is an important factor. I've seen fakes on Ebay where
the nib says "iridium" (I think). A tooled Montblanc nib is
difficult to fake. Look at web sites to see a close up to see
what these nibs should look like.

On more expensive MBs, too, you'll also find serial numbers.

Mike
