Default Capacitor problem in Rockola 1434 Accumulator

I have a Rockola 1434 that I am restoring. I think I found a problem in the Accumulator. There is a large capacitor that appears to be leaking (white tube like stuff on one end). Can I just go to radio shack and get a 'modern' replacement or should I look for an identical 'paper' capacitor? I assume if the values are the same, they should be interchangeable, but (as my wife so often reminds me) I have been wrong before! Thanks.

Hi - When you look for a replacement, just make sure the voltage
rating on the replacement cap is at least as high as the defective
cap. You can go higher in voltage rating, but not lower. You can
also go a tad bit higher in capacitance if necessary. If the
defective cap is an electrolytic type cap, I'd replace it with another
electrolytic type and be sure to know how to identify the positive
side from the negative side. Newer type electrolytic's don't always
put a + on them. They just put a big arrow pointing to the negative
side. Also - while you're doing this work, check out the other caps -
the older paper ones. If you find one bad one, you might see other's
going bad. If you're comfortable doing your own work, you may
consider replacing all the old ones. Radio Shack may have a suitable
cap replacement, but if you find they don't have a large selection of
them, here are a couple of links that will be able to give you all
types of caps. http://www.justradios.com/ = A Canadian firm that
has a large selection and an Excel based ordering form.
http://www.tubesandmore.com/ = A good selection as well. Good luck
with your project.
