Johnny Rockets wall boxes
I was in the new Johnny Rockets cafe here in Olympia the other day.
They have reproduction Seeburg 3W1 wallboxes at every booth and on the counter. The boxes are obviously new and they state "Custom made for Johnny Rockets by Rock-ola Mfg Co." However, I can't find any information about these on Rock-ola's website. I was wondering what the internal guts of the repro wallboxes look like and what jukebox they are connected to. I could only get from the employees there that the box is in the kitchen (bad place for a jukebox!), but they couldn't tell me any more about it. |

They have a small green window near where it says "Custom made
for.....etc". It has an led in it that lights when you stick a nickle it the coin slot. When you push the selection buttons they don't latch----they beep quietly. One beep when one button is pushed and when you push the second button two beeps are heard. You've got to put your ear right next to the thing to hear the beeps. Obviously, this wall box is communicating via some serial, RS232 or RS485 interface like a Rowe CD or Downloader would. I'm curious as to what model/type of juke it's connected to. I didn't see any general illumination lights in the wallbox itself. The title strip holders seemed to be much narrower than what you'd find on a 3W1 wallbox plus there were only four holders to thumb through. All the title strips were printed on one solid sheet of paper approx. 3" wide by 10" high. There were no individual strips. |

I saw these some 13+ years back at a Johnny Rockets in Australia. They were definitely non-standard (or retrofitted internally) as they had solid state internals, LED indicators etc. To me, they looked cheap and tacky compared to "real" wallboxes, but to the average person it probably was very "retro" and exciting. Enquiries I made at the time told that they were connected to a consumer type multi-cd stacker by a proprietary system, and it wasnt any established industry standard (ie: AMI/Rockola etc) system. (how reliable this info is, I dont know) Of course, the systems used now in JR stores (and/or in USA market) may be very different to this one. |

I understand the system used now is a hide-away Rock-ola jukebox. I
don't know if it's a CD type or a downloader type. Since this is in use in a commercial location it would have to be a licensed situation. I couldn't see a place like Johnny Rockets violating copyright laws. All the songs I saw on the title strips were definitely copyrighted music ("Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding as an example). |

If they are made by Rock-Ola, why not just get in touch with Rock-Ola ans
ask them about it ? SImple enough . "Ken Layton" wrote in message oups.com... I was in the new Johnny Rockets cafe here in Olympia the other day.
