Selling Books
I am new to buying and selling books. I have two books of value Clive
Clussler The Sea Hunters II and Politics of the Northwest Passage. What a good way to sell these books as I am not a big book seller so I can't afford to use alibris or abebooks? |

What a good way to sell these books as I am not a big book seller so I can't afford to use alibris or abebooks? Most people who don't do a lot of this have pretty much three options: sell to a dealer (if you can find one) at a small percentage of the retail value;,put it up for auction on eBay; or donate it for the tax write off. On AddALL, it looks like *Politics of the Northwest Passage* is running anywhere from $15 to $70, with a spike of three copies up into the hundreds. I see no copies at all on eBay. The Clive Cussler book seems to be in the $20's range for first editions, with a couple of signed copies being offered near $45 and one at about $80, with tons of paperback reading copies at under $10. There are currently 20 copies of this title in eBay auctions and over 100 in eBay stores, with many 1st editions going for under $10. In one case, with a Buy-it-now for under $5. If it were me, I would probably donate the Cussler book, unless it's signed. There are just too many copies around that are too cheap on eBay, and you don't have a brick and mortar store where it can sit for a few years until someone can walk in and purchase it. But, I would eBay the *Politics of the Northwest Passage*. When your book can't be found on eBay at all, that's a big plus. I could be wrong, but I believe there are a lot of eBay users who don't know how to shop the internet book sites and they may actually push the price up higher than other available copies just because they don't know where to find the others. I've sold quite a few books above the going rate just because there were no comparables on eBay. Just make sure you a good description of the content (so buyers will find it in a search) and at least one really good picture, so they can see the condition. Also, state your Media Mail shipping charges. People don't like to bid when they don't know their total cost. Alice -- Book collecting terms illustrated. What about if I am planning on trying to make this into a business
where I am selling larger amounts of books. I won't be using a store front though. My Clive Cussler book is Very Fine/Very Fine so I thought it may have some more value. My wings can you email me so we can talk? |

BookFriend, you're more than welcome to email me (just remove the capital letters from my return email address) but I don't consider myself an expert at all, and most of what I've learned I learned right here in this newsgroup. Why not ask a few more questions here, and take advantage of the wealth of knowledge that's available? Johathan Grobe recommended Amazon, for instance. I've never used it, so it didn't leap to mind for me. This is really a collecting group, but most of the people who collect wind up selling if only to make more room on their shelves, so I don't think a few "selling" questions are totally out of line, as long as they don't turn into advertisements. Does anyone know of an active booksellers group that isn't affiliated with a specific sales venue? Alice -- Book collecting terms illustrated.
