Best US coin design type set?
If you ran the mint, and could choose any US coin design from history
to replace the uninspired collection we have today, what would you choose? My choices: Cent: Indian Head Nickel: Buffalo Dime: "Mercury" Quarter: Half: Walking Liberty Dollar: 5 dollar: Incuse indian (proper name?) 10 dollar: 20 dollar: St. Gaudens What would your dream lineup consist of? |

Best US coin design type set?
Dave Hinz wrote: If you ran the mint, and could choose any US coin design from history to replace the uninspired collection we have today, what would you choose? My choices:... This is easy. I would like coins that honor the things that are most important to the people of the country. Cent: Green Bean Sprout Nickel: Pig Dime: Cow Quarter: Chicken Half Dollar: Potato Dollar: Corn and so on... Come to think of it, the presidents aren't really very important in keeping the country working. It's the farmers. I guess that we would have to put plows and tractors on some of the bills. That would be a cool set of coins. I don't think anyone would want to collect them, though. Anita |

Nickel: Buffalo Agreed. Dime: "Mercury" Agreed. Quarter: Standing Liberty 1916 Half: Walking Liberty Agreed. Dollar: Hmmm ... tough call. Either the Peace dollar or the 1798-1804 Heraldic Eagle 5 dollar: Incuse indian (proper name?) As in the 1908-1929 Indian Head? That's my pick. 10 dollar: Indian Head again. No question. Prefer the Motto version for balance. 20 dollar: St. Gaudens 1907 Ultra High Relief. - Sheldon |

With respect to Anita's fine farmyard choices (indeed many old bank notes had agricultural themes, so she's not far off the mark), I would choose from historical designs: Penny: I like the flying eagle design, but I think it's too small for the penny. So, I'd put the Indian on the front and the 2c shield on the back. Nickel: shield nickel obverse, buffalo reverse Dime: the 3c star/shield obverse, 1946 reverse Quarter: 1804 or 1815 obverse 1916 reverse Half: 1794 obverse, flying eagle penny design for reverse Alt. half: 1934 Ark. reverse for the obverse, 1916 regular reverse Alt. half: 1934 Tex. commemorative without all the Texas specifics Dollar: 1915 $50 front & back None of them would have "In God We Trust" or "E Pluribus Unum". Not that I don't like or appreciate these mottoes, but they clutter small spaces. Ideally, all other wording would be small in order to maximise the beauty of the designs. Put "United States of America" on the rim; and keep the other elements small and along the edge (no words in the field). Cent: Indian Head --agree, but can the reverse be the Flying Eagle?? Nickel: Buffalo--hard to pick against, but I always liked the Liberty Nickels Dime: "Mercury"--another tough one, but there is something about the Barber Dime I like Quarter: --Seated Liberty Half: Walking Liberty--Franklin, too short an issue, he was robbed Dollar: --Morgan |

I don't know if it's the contrast between the stunningly beautiful Walking Liberty half, down to, well, an uninteresting bust and a bell, or what. It just seems like it's of cartoon quality, replacing a sculptural work of art. |
