Better call the FBI. An unmarked electrotype! National security is as
risk.

I fault the seller for not disclosing the true nature of the piece until
'way down low in the listing. Seems to me that information should be in the
header. But, then, what do I know?

I sure wish you two assholes would grow up. For christs sake, if you
wish to taunt each other, take it to ****ing private email. I suspect
more than just I are tired of the trivial bull**** you both are swapping.

Agreed, and while I wish outfits like Superior did not handle mateial
such as this, there is little or nothing that can be done. The item
does not fit the true legal definition of "counterfeit" per US Code
since the original was not minted by the US or any other foreign
government.

Additionally, since the date of manufacture obviously predates 1973 the
Hobby Protection Act would not apply.

Frank is just trolling....something he accused me of doing earlier
today. What a drama queen.

Much has been made about getting kids into the hobby. Judging from some of
the posts I've read lately, I'd saying they are being driven away. Don't say
"Just ignore it", it's ti late to do so once it's been read (ie. no warning
that it's coming). Andy

Of course, there's always a delete button on every keyboard.

Better yet, your ignore poster and ignore thread tools are your best
friends on usenet. It takes much less effort and, used properly, you
really don't miss anything of value.

Superior should mention that it's an electrotype copy in the auction's
title. The title reads as if this were an authentic coin. Even in the
body of the auction no mention is made of it being a copy. On the word
"electrotype" is used. That's almost like calling a copy a "clad
proof" and expecting everybody to know it's a copy.

Well, better call in the Secret Service, the FBI, the Coast Guard, and
the Sheriff Andy Taylor. This is contraband!!! No indication it was
made before the passage of the U.S. Hobby Protection Act in 1973. It
could have been made last year, ten years ago, fifty years ago, though
it wasn't made c. 1785! No provenance is given at all, in fact. Yep,
definitely worth the estimate of $450-$670...

It realised $750.

I could understand getting a price of circa $30 as a curiosity / a make
do substitute for a blank space in an album, but $750??. That's in the
realm of looney tunes.

Oddly, the electroype probably has more historical significance to American
collectors
than the originals. The copy was almost assuredly made in the USA by a
museum perhaps
150 years ago. The originals were made in England!

Thanks for the insight. That context does put at least some sense to it
I guess.

There seems to have been quite an interest back in the late 1800's
amongst collectors for such pieces. Sufficiently so to make it viable to
produce limited edition mintings.

Every now and again I see 1880's (and earlier) restrikes of French
Colonial pieces on the market (mainly Paris Mint issues such as the so
called `Castorland Half Dollar'). While the originals are still very
much sought after both in the US and Canada, most collectors remain
completely ignorant of their existence. While there must have been a
significant market demand for the restrikes at some stage judging from
old catalogue values, they tend to be available more or less for a song
these days. Hence my surprise that this particular `restrike' seems to
have attracted such a high figure.
