Your list is a mix of possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns.
Here is the list of possessive
adjectives: my, your (thy), his, her, its, our, your, their.

Here is the list of corresponding possessive pronouns: mine, yours
(thine), his, hers, its, ours, yours, theirs.

Huh? My list is the same as your second list, just not as complete (I
hadn't intended on making an exhaustive list).

But I agree that it is the possessive adjective instance of "its" that
causes the most trouble with folk; especially online, it seems.

Now, let's engage in a campaign to get rid of apostrophe's in plural word's.

Oh the unusual things you find on google.

http://www.decaturdailydemocrat.com/...ditorial03.txt

From the article:

"The worst of this ordeal is the nationwide negative exposure that
will be given the entire city of Decatur, due to the nastiness of a
few. snip This letter is going to be sent to several newspapers,
including USA Today. The Decatur Chamber of Commerce and the mayor
will be contacted first thing Monday morning."

The "worst of this ordeal" is that the person sending the letter out
is the one drawing the bad publicity to the Decatur area. Instead
of
dealing with the responsible parties, they want to attract the media
attention to make a big deal out of it.

That's sometimes the only way to get things done. In this case, do
you
really think the city government is going to do the right thing and
act in favour of a few marginalised people who practice a
marginalised
religion? A religion which, I might add, MOST of their (voting)
constituency believe is SATANISM?

What jurisdiction do you think the city has to take any action against
a private club?

What about the plural with an apostrophe preceding it, as in "egg's for
sale"? The people who post these signs do not put an apostrophe before
other plurals, even in the same sentence.

In writing, there are also instances of poor, good and better

usage.

For instance:
"No pronouns get a possessive apostrophe: his, hers, its, ours,

Awkward ;-)

Better: Pronouns do not require an apostrophe to show
possession. Ex: his, hers, its, ours, theirs.

Dale, this thread makes me think of a sign I saw out at the new

Wal*Mart the
other day. Someone had written on white cardboard with a black

marker:

"Attention all Associate's, Vendor's, and Contractor's: You must blah

blah
blah..."

I cringed when I read it. Note: To keep this thread on topic, I

hasten
to add that I don't know if any of the aforementioned individuals are

pagan,
or not. Nor do I know whether any of them sell coins at flea markets,

and if
so, I don't know if any of them have ever been barred from same by a

local
coin club.

Yoosta

Can't expect WalMart to hire too many folks with a B.A. or B.S. If
William Faulkner or T.S. Elliot worked there, they would probably be
greeters at the front door. Of course, maybe e.e. cummings could do
the signs...

That's one of those "Things you should have learned in school, had you been
paying attention." Unfortunately, there are now far more incorrect than
correct examples available. I think the balance tipped about 20 years ago,
and spelling has deteriorated ever since.

If they're renting a public space, the city could (but as I say,
probably would not) get involved. If the club owns the hall, then
there probably wouldn't be any way for the city to get involved.

It is (it's) a big deal. It shows how dangerous the self-righteous right
can be.

JAM

Don't assume Religious Right. There's a lot of misunderstanding out
there as to what Pagans really are....and some of it within the Pagan
community itself!

Some of the misunderstandings are pretty scary. If I believed that
someone was going to eat my children, I'd want them kept away too!

Bruce

I know some of those Pagans can be intimidating, but I've never heard of any
motorcycle club member eating a child.

I agree about the grammer war. Using your instead of you're is one
of my pet peeves. Though nothing is as bad as using it's instead of its.
That one drives me absolutely bonkers, and you find it so many many
putblications, as well as auctions.

its is an EXCEPTION to the rule that you add an apostrophe to make a
noun posessive. its means, 'something belonging to it.' As in, its nose
sniffed the air.

it's is a contraction for IT IS, as in, it's going to be a rainy
day.

How about "then" when you mean "than", "their" when you mean "there", etc,
etc. I wonder how English is being taught in schools today and by whom. I
have seen English teachers missuse some of these words. Sheeeesh!

.....When we enquired as to why, my friend was told simply "because
you sell satanic stuff. We sent you a check for a refund and a letter
telling you this." Well, this letter or check was never received. How
could it have even been sent when the club did not have an address to
send it to? I was appalled.......

.....When I went to personally enquire as to why (the reservation was
not honored), I was told "because your witches." ......

According to the letter writer's side of the story it sounds like the
person made an attempt and was not satisfied with the reasons she
got. In fact she felt she was being discriminated on the basis of her
religion. Probably feels like a big deal to her.

Maybe congress will stick it's nose into this too?

I think Congress ought to pass a law that requires the Federal courts to
hear this case. :-)
