Default Newsgroup Spam

Just started posting to this newsgroup yesterday. Already getting a swag of
spam. Much with virus attached! Any old hands here know how to stop this?

It's the bane of newsgroup readers everywhere. Once your address is
on UseNet, it's tough to not avoid the harvesters out there - scum
that they are.

I've got the same problem, like everyone. I've been wondering if it would be
worthwhile to get a different e-mail address to use just with Usenet, and
include a warning in it that e-mails won't be answered. Has anyone tried
this?

This is a viable solution, as is using an anonomous remailer to do the
groups. But I found the simplist for me was to set up a filter and it
works like a champ. You can filter on a subject or sender and is quite
easy to do. I get at most 4-5 per week total since I set one up. I've
also set them up for various newsgroups for the really annoying crap.

Strange. Our spam has suddenly declined dramatically over the past week.
The ISP has done nothing different, and we haven't changed filters or rules,
either. Maybe the new Congressional action has scared the perps.
