Flora and Fauna Series
I have checked the Arago website, and the American Plate Number Single
Society website, and have seen conflicting information on what constitutes the Flora and Fauna Series. From what I see in the Scott catalog, the series began in 1987-88 with the 25 cent pheasant, grosbeak, owl and honeyee stamps. One may assume the series is ongoing with the 2007 issues of the 17 cent bighorn sheep on 5/14/07, and the 26 cent florida panther on 5/12/07. According to the Arago website, the last stamps issued were the apple and orange of spring 2001. According to the APNSS, this ongoing semi-official series includes various definitives and make-up rate stamps from 1991 to 2006. What is your opinion on when the series began and, if it has ended, when it ended? Also, what stamps do you feel do NOT belong in this series. It is my hope to start a study group on this series. |

Assignment to sets of what one might call "occasional" issues of similar design/theme is entirely at the catalogue-compiler's whim. SG has the pheasant of 29-Apr-1988 in a set of its own, the grossbeak and owl as a new 2-stamp set (not much choice as they're se-tenant), bee separate, ... I'd say it's entirely up to you what you include, probably the more the merrier. One demarcation could be when the typeface changes. Chris |

Chris I'd like to offer, not dissent, but perhaps another option, Chris. It was only last evening, that I was browsing the USPS bible, and noticed, something of a similar vein. If you take the US 1961 Remington "Smoke Signal" and read it's details, one would think it a singleton. Further through the catalogue, (and I cannot recall what issue) there is another Western issue, and the USPS claims it is part of an "occaisional" (our term) set of western prints. (it may be the "Trail Boss" by Russell or one of the others I'll have to check) The important thing is the USPS is aware, and states a flowing of design and theme in a so-called "set". Perhaps bluefrog would be well advised to seek out information from the/an up to date ver POD catalogue, I'd be fairly sure the sets would be clarified. That doesn't follow with overseas catalogues, and your comments would be correct using SG. Cheers. -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |

I found the set, and was a little off mark. It is the "Fine Arts" set and includes Frederick Remington : "smoke signal" Winslow Homer: "Breezing up" John James Audubon: "Columbia Jays" Charles M Russell : "American Painting" Thats all I have, my cat terminates 1965 -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |
