Ebay quietly changes shill bidding policies
Ebay has quietly modified its shill bidding policies to remove problematic bans against bidding on items sold by people you know or if you have knowledge about an item that others do not have (with threats to notify law enforcement!) This created problems for people who are bidding on items from trusted local sellers, or those who perhaps cared enough to inspect an item in person before bidding. (Do they now "know" the seller? Do they now have more knowledge than other bidders and must disqualify themselves?) Ebay drop-off stores were forced to watch their consignor's items sell for less than their true value if an employee wanted to bid on them -- hurting the consignor, who gets less for his item, and both ebay and the drop-off store, who make less commissions. The new policy, practical and simple ( is this a first for eBay?) is basically: Don't use a fake account to run up the price of YOUR items. You can buy from people you know as long as you intend to buy the item and not artificially increase its price or desirability.

Oh well. In my effort to say something silly about 12/21/2012, really didn't say the most important thing. It seems to me that by his choice of subject matter and his weasel-worded original post, Frank MOL admits that he shill bids against his own customers; that he has done it in the past and that he will do it in the future. additionally, that he sees nothing wrong with that proactice and that he takes e-bay's pronouncement as some form of justification for all of his past bad-faith actions towards people who would bid on his "auctions". Caveat emptor, e-bay-bee!!! You bid with Frank, you're dealing with a real prince of the hobby. oly |

the problem of shill bidding is made particularly obvious with the recent indictment of Bill Mastro of the former Mastro Auctions along with former executives; Doug Allen and Mark Theotikos for defrauding customers through were indicted on fraud charges for allegedly rigging auctions through a series of deceptive practices, including so-called “shill-bidding,” designed to inflate prices paid by bidders and to protect the interests of consignors and sellers at the expense of unwitting bidders amongst several indictment complaints. The latter two if they sound familiar s because they are are currently executives of Legendary Auctions. Mastro has since pleaded guilty. It's not just EBAY that has this issue but the issue is one of detection and enforcement. |
