Lawrence Labree New York Illustrated
I have a book that has me pretty much stumped. I can find absolutely
no info about it, other than it was a successor to The Rover. This book is called The New York Illustrated Magazine of Literature and Art, published in NY by Burgess and Stringer, 1847. Edited by Lawrence Labree. It's an anthology of literature and poetry, with engraved illustrations. I found some information about Labree, that he was involved in a controversy about Poe and Longfellow. Among the contributers are Dickens (The Breaking of Swords, an excerpt from Master Humphrey's Clock,) Seba Smith, Charles Fenno Hoffman and Henry William Herbert. Can anyone shed some light on this? Bob Streeter Dear Bob, Most library records and periodical collections show William Taylor and Company as the publisher of the "New York Illustrated Magazine of Literature and Art" or "New York Illustrated Magazine" for short. The magazine was published by Taylor at 2 Astor House in New York. It began as a weekly periodical on Sept. 20, 1845. By January 1847 it was reduced to a monthly periodical and folded sometime in 1847. Some records show its last issue was March 1847, while another source cites June 1847 as its last issue. If you have Vol. III, which began in Jan. 1847, you can tell us when the last issue was published. The LOC website cites a periodical that was published in Albany by another publisher that has the Burgess, Stringer and Company imprint on its title page. It is a remote possibility that Burgess, Stringer and Company purchased the remaining copies of the "New York Illustratred Magazine" from Taylor when the periodical folded, and stamped the Burgess, Stringer imprint on the title page; however, I could find no record that such a copy has been previously recorded.
