Another (worse) Rushdie forged signature on eBay

The seller's response was (I'm paraphrasing here), "Omigosh, you're right--it does look like that's a forgery. I'll let the winning bidder know *after the auction is over* and let the buyer decide then if s/he still wants the book." R-i-i-i-i-ght. That's the kind of thing I'd report to eBay: a seller who *knows* it's fake, and doesn't cancel the listing. They can't get away with "I don't know if this is real or not" .... and you have them dead to rights with that email admission of what they plan to do next. Your clever plan fails to take into account one thing: I'm an idiot. I deleted the email. sigh I'll think ahead next time, Auntie, I promise. --Jon Meyers |

Another (worse) Rushdie forged signature on eBay

Jon Meyers wrote: Apparently a forged signature doesn't have to even remotely resemble the genuine article to draw in the suckers: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=7008060408 All I can say about this one is that the initials are correct, and there's apparently supposed to be a dotted letter in the last name (Sara Rice? Sam Ruiz?); other than that, everything else is wrong. Not to argue with you but how can you know if it's Rushdie signature or not unless he verifies it? I've seen six books purported to have been signed by him; three with excellent provenance. All six signatures looked so dissimilar that all could have been genuine. For the particular signature you are referring to, let's look at the number of things wrong with it, compared to other Rushdie sigs I've seen: 1) For starters, it's on the front free-endpaper. In my experience, he nearly always signs on the title page. 2) The first name is written above the last. He always signs his names in the same line, and quite often the terminal "n" in the first is attached to the "R" of the last. 3) There are no upward extenders for the "l" in Salman or the "h" in Rushdie. Once again, this is at variance with nearly every genuine sig. 4) The top half of the "S" in Salman is smaller than the bottom; it's the other way around in the real thing. 5) The vertical in the "R" is shaped almost like a "j", while in a genuine sig the vertical is completely straight. 6) This one's a quibble: Usually the dot over the "i" is farther to the right. I'm sure you could hunt up exceptions to each of these features separately, but taken together they convincingly (for me, anyway) mark that eBay signature as bogus. For the record, I have nine SR books that were signed for me in person, one I bought from a reputable dealer, and a promo item with a signed card, from one of his US publishers. --Jon Meyers |
