(RCSD) Question About U.S. Precancels
Howdy - Doo... Does anyone know if there were ever any hand stamped precancels? I have the precancel catalogs from the Society, but don't have them available at the moment. I see cancels that "look" like precancels, but they look more like parcel cancels - rectangular, with city and state between the obligatory bars on top and bottom. If there are private hand stamp precancels, oops... I have been overlooking them and tossing them into my U.S. packets. I just don't remember seeing anywhere where there were hand stamped precancels. Tracy Hi Tracy: In the US, precancels were printed by the government (called Bureau precancels), printed locally under local Post Office control, or handstamped locally (both of the last two catagories are called "Locals"). There are thousands of different types and varieties, and precancel collecting can be a major avocation. In Canada, the precancels were mostly printed. There are enough that collecting Canadian precancels is a very nice specialty area even though the prices on them have risen recently. Other countries that have issued precancels mostly for use on newspapers a Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, France, Tunisia, Algeria, and Monaco. There are many precancels from Belgium. The printed ones are listed in some foreign catalogs and are collected in Europe in MNH condition. Some prefer to collect them used as they are cheaper that way. There are many more hand-stamped ones. The towns that issued them are available on lists from specialist societies. as are the years of use. You could get a collection of these totaling more than a thousand different. The precancels of Luxembourg are either very cheap or very hard to find and expensive. A good specialty for a masocist. Tunisia, Algeria and Monaco can be completely collected for a small amount of money. The early precancels of France are expensive. The rest are cheap and make a colorful little collection. The precancels of the Netherlands are a well kept secret. In addition, the countries of Austria, Hungary, France and Turkey had laws that allowed the attaching of newspaper stamps, newspaper tax stamps, and revenues to newspapers before the newspapers were printed. This resulted in some of these stamps being cancelled with newsprint. An interesting collection is so see how many different languages you can find on Austrian newspaper stamps. These stamps are not all that rare in most cases, but they are not all that easy to find either. Blair |

In fact, I just did - about something else. Coincidence? One wonders some times. |

(RCSD) Question About U.S. Precancels
Tracy, try posting your Q to the Precancel Yahoo list. Although traffic
is extremely low, there are some very knowledgeable people that subscribe (free). It's not affiliated with the Precancel society, however a number of their members are subscribers. wrote: Thanks Blair... I'll keep on looking for something about hand stamped beasties, but I think I'm chasing a ghost. I have a lot of U.S. and Belgian pre-cancels, a fair amount of France, but not much from anywhere else. If one were to collect various permutations of pre-cancels, it would indeed be an interesting collection. I'll have to look up if the older pre-cancels are still valid for postage. Hmmm... I'd have to get a permit to use them anyway... Well, thanks again for the primer. Tracy On Aug 14, 11:06 pm, wrote: Howdy - Doo... Does anyone know if there were ever any hand stamped precancels? (RCSD) Question About U.S. Precancels
At a recent local club mtg we were discussing that topic and in general
it would appear that most stamps regardless of country of origin have increased in value (according to Scott). However I won't hold my breath on my meager holdingsG. John wrote: Howdy - Doo... You're right that there have been some knowledgeable people in some of the groups out there. wrote: Howdy - Doo... Does anyone know if there were ever any hand stamped precancels? However I won't hold my breath on my meager holdingsG. Maybe this was / is to reflect how the rest of the world "values" them? We need a stamp club up here in the mountains. Hmmm... I'm not cashing in the chips (oops!) yet. There's no world cruise, except that I now have envelopes of stamps that were almost worthless before that seem to be valued a lot more than before. More expensive baggage. I won't be moving on up to that big apartment in the city anytime soon. I've ignored CV for so long that when I looked at recent valuations, they have got me thinking about them again. Tracy wrote: Howdy - Doo...
