Blair, is there an image of the recent high value moose
stamp (5 dollars) available on the Internet somewhere? I have searched the Canadian Postal Archives website, but 2003 seems not yet added. Mette TC wrote in message ... Martin Morck engraved the polar bear. If you google for Martin Morck, a number of links come up. He has engraved several stamps for Canada and France, Greenland, Denmark and others. Another one to watch out for is Lars Sjööblom, who is a genious in engraving animals of any kind. He has done a number for Sweden, Denmark and Greenland, but as far as I know, not yet for Canada. I have met both of them in Copenhagen. Mette Mette: I believe I read that Jorge Peral came from Mexico. (probably to enjoy the better weather of Canadian winters.) The $1 Loon, $2 Polar Bear and $8 Grizzly Bear stamps The Loon and Polar Bear stamps are paralleled with the coins issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. Steven Slipp of Halifax and Alain Leduc of Montreal are the designers of these two stamps. Robert Ralph Carmichael, artist of the $1.00 coin, created the illustration for the loon on the stamp. A full time painter from Echo-Bay, Ontario, Mr. Carmichael has designed a number of coinsfor the Royal Canadian Mint. Similarly, Brent Townsend (of Warwick, Ontario) who worked on the $2.00 polar bear coin, created the illustration for the polar bear stamp. Jorge Peral, the engraver for the $8 grizzly bear stamp, did the engraving for the $1 loon stamp and Martin Morck engraved the $2 polar bear stamp. The new $5 Moose stamp A bull moose with a full spread of antlers is one of the most imposing beasts in North America. It stands taller at the shoulder than the largest of horses and weighs as much as a horse, reaching up to 800 kg. It is estimated that there are close to one million of the animals in Canada. The moose that adorns Canada Post's new $5.00 definitive stamp is an image from a steel engraving by master engraver Jorge Peral, which was itself based on a drawing by wildlife artist David Preston-Smith. Designer Steven Slipp says he aimed to represent the monumentality of the animal. "The pose suggests an animal who is feeding and may have just been interrupted by the viewer, making a one-on-one encounter." Several innovative security features have been imprinted on this stamp, including a hidden linework of a Moose drawing printed in a fluorescent colour that is invisible to the naked eye. When the stamp is illuminated by ultraviolet light the line drawing shows up as a purple blue colour. The linework is based on a rock engraving of a Moose created in past times by a Micmac Indian from New Brunswick. This same linework drawing appears engraved in the four corners of the pane margins. A picture of Jorge Peral at work on the $10 banknote can be seen at: (NOTE: Please scroll down to page 30) http://www.bankofcanada.ca/en/annual...tewardship.pdf Blair -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =----- |

Thank you Blair. After some scrolling I finally found the image on page 8 (of the .pdf-file) ... It is interesting how Canadian coins and stamps are paralleled in national symbols. Following Scott# the 1c (penny) has the maple leaf. 5c (nickel) pictures the beaver, Canada # 1. 10c (dime) pictures Bluenose, Canada # 158. 25c (quarter) is -- up to now -- shown on Canada # 360, and of course the new moose stamp. 50c (half dollar) is reflected on Canada # E7, 1 dollar (loonie) is on Canada # 1697, and 2 dollar (toonie) is on Canada # 1698. Mette ================================================== ===== Hello Mette: Just one minor correction. The Canadian quarter (25c) shows a caribou and not a moose. Caribou can be seen on Scott 360 (4c) April 12, 1956 and on Soott 1180 (80c) from the 1987-91 set. As you know, a new Caribou-stamp is announced for December 2004.
