Euros being Faked
Many fake coin workshops seized in Italy
http://www.businessweek.com/ap/finan...e_down&chan=db More than half of all workshops discovered making fake euro coins last year were Italian, the European Commission said Tuesday. "We found six coin workshops in Italy, and one we found in Spain was run by Italian counterfeiters," EU anti-fraud official Iannis Xenakis said Tuesday. Four other factories were discovered in Hungary, Poland and would-be EU member Bulgaria -- none of them a country that uses the EU's single currency. Most of the fake coins are found within the 12-nation euro area. ...... ***** Further to comments about ancient forgeries posted recently: There's a lot more money in counterfeiting current money than there will ever be in forging ancient coins. The reason people forge ancient coins instead of modern money is that in many nations forging ancient coins is a legal activity. On the other hand, counterfeiting current money of any nation is a major crime in almost every nation except North Korea. If it is ever possible to make undetectable copies of coins, there won't be any incentive left to make forgeries of ancient coins. "We found six coin workshops in Italy, and one we found in Spain was run by Italian counterfeiters," Looking desperatly for fake coins... Stay tuned. May take a while. Let's see ... 365,000 counterfeited euro pieces have been found since 1-Jan-2002. Last year's number was roughly 96,000. Most of the counterfeits are "¤1" (one in five) and "¤2" (almost four in five) pieces. So you should focus your search on ¤2 coins. However, while about 12 billion ¤1 and ¤2 coins circulate in Euroland, there are approximately 10 million fake ¤1 and ¤2 pieces in circulation ... that is a little less than 0.1 percent. Now try and find one g. Christian |
