backs of stamps~stump the experts?
French Guyana/Guiana,
I noticed it being unusually thick paper, and saw that it probably was two identical issues doing a piggy back via gum attraction. What attracted me was also the black line on the reverse. On soaking the lower issue was blank. Anyone have an idea how this could occur/why? scan shows the two together to show the identical perfs. http://cjoint.com/data/izez6Diq1U.htm |

It is not a proof, is it? Regarding re-use of paper, the first Lativan issues are some of the more fascinating: The first sets were printed on the backs of Germany WW-2 military maps (putting a sheet back together might be an interesting puzzle game - if you can afford all the stamps), later you find prints on regular blue-lined writing paper and ultra-thin cigarette paper.... Similar issues exist also from other countries. Another possibility a that your stamps is a displaced printing along some edge of the sheet. G'day Bjorn,
the "edge of sheet" supposition sounds practical, the black line centre stamp by virtue of its similarity with others of its ilk, would suggest a deeper meaning, hidden somewhere amongst a printers history. The mark appears to me, not to be just random, and not on the back of the stamp, but to attached material, attached to the stamp. curious indeed. Bravo! Dominique Stéphan, of course, well done.
