Turkey. Was: Irish independence?

... Victor Manta wrote: "Alan" wrote in message ... Victor Manta wrote: "Alan" wrote in message ... Israel has a football/soccer team in the European Cup this year. Actually each time, and also in basketball. The reason is obvious, and it has nothing to do with the geographical location. Sorry, why obvious ? Alan, you can eventually remember this event: "The Munich massacre occurred during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, when members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage by the Palestinian terrorist group Black September, a group with ties to Yasser Arafat's Fatah organization. By the end of the ordeal, the group had murdered eleven Israeli athletes and one German police officer." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munich_massacre Now, if something like that could happen in Munich, it is not difficult to imagine what could happen if an Israeli sport team had to play in some of its neighboring countries. In order to prevent such dangers, the sport teams from Israel compete with the European ones, as well in Europe as in Israel. Victor By that example perhaps the Israelis should associate somewhere else rather than Europe, perhaps Asia !. Alan Sorry, but I cannot follow your logic, Alan. That weren't Germans that killed the Israeli sportspeople (a German policeman even died too) but some hostile Arabs, so that I don't see why Europe isn't the right place for Israelis to play football, basketball, etc., what they actually do! The modern Hebrew (one of Israel's official languages, and the widely spoken one) is heavily influenced by the European languages. The majority of the Israel population is actualy of European origin, and the mostly spoken non-oficial languages are Russian and Romanian (that are, of course, European languages). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Israel For all these reasons I don't really see why Israel should associate with Asia or any other continent, excepting for Europe. -- Victor Manta |

... Victor, I think your point was that they would be safer playing in Europe than the Middle East, but after what happened in Germany that theory doesn't work. If you follow your logic and they play somewhere safer, then Europe (After Munich, London Madrid etc)is not safe either. In fact rather than Asia perhaps they should play in the US, in the NBA, MSL and even MLB (World Series !). Alan I didn't know that Israeli sportsmen were killed in London or Madrid. BTW, London and Madrid terrorist attacks have more to do with what happened on 9/11, you know where. I wonder which will be your next proposal: Africa, Australia or Antarctica? I can imagine a football match against the penguins :-) Just to note that the best club level football (soccer) is played here, in Europe. -- Victor Manta ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Spanish North Africa: http://www.sna-on.postalstamps.biz/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

I can imagine a football match against the penguins :-) The safety (or lack of) is the issue, not the nationalities of those killed, unless you are suggesting that if they're not Israeli then it doesn't matter. I'm not suggesting it at all (keywords: red herring = irrelevant thesis=ignoring the issue). Just to remind that the subject was why Israeli (!) sport teams compete in Europe. To answer my own question, probably the highest safety is in Antarctica, for any teams. ;-) Back to stamps, and to the relationship between Israel and European countries, I have found these stamp issues interesting: - On 22 August 1993, the Israel PA issued a S/S dedicated to the Israel-Romanian Stamps Exhibition TELAFILA '93. - On 19 November 1997, the Israel PA issued a S/S in the commemoration of the International Pushkin Year (Pushkin = the most renown Russian poet). -- Victor Manta |
