TECH: Tonearm balancing/tuning on Rowe R-87
First off let me qualify myself he I'm a pin guy who happened to
pick up a jukebox recently, so all of this is still a bit foreign to me, but I catch on quickly. I'm in the middle of restoring an R-87, and I've got almost everything working nicely, but I can't seem to get the tonearm to track on the record. It positions itself correctly, the height is adjusted just as the manual suggests, the weight has been adjusted ad infinitum, and still no luck. In fact, I'd hate to see just what the tracking force I was putting on the thing at the point where the weight was only .4 inches from the bracket. But I have two semi complete mechanisms that I have frankensteined into one working one, and the weights are different - one has a screw on the back side that the other doesn't so I'm sure that had to influence things. I'm a vinyl guy from way back, and own two turntables currently, both my old Technics workhorse and a new Denon digital one, so I understand tonearm balancing and I know how little distance is necessary to create large changes in tracking force. I would like to not regroove records with this thing, although it's not for me - I'm restoring it for a friend who has tons of 45's, but I don't want to destroy his records either. What I'm wondering also is that the whole tonearm ass'y rides on that pin, and it seems that when I was adjusting the horizontal position that it pushed down into the collet and became stiifer in movement. So I popped it back up and that isn't fixing it either. What is the deal with the adjuster on the side that controls vertical movement? Just how tight should that be? Plus I'm not getting any output on the right side. The 10" speakers both work, but they're jumpered anyway and not stereo. How suspect should I consider my large caps to be, or perhaps there are components on the driver board that are more suspect? I've visually inspected them while cleaning and nothing is obviously toasted or swollen, but there is some heat discoloration near the heat sink that I would consider normal and typical from what I've seen in pins and such. Also, if I'm not using any wallboxes or external speakers, where should I have the pink/violet wires on the output x-former? Would any of that affect the output to one side? I've checked the crossover wiring and it's all intact and the components are fine. Any help would be appreciated. It's frustrating to be so close and not be able to cross the last hurdles. |

TECH: Tonearm balancing/tuning on Rowe R-87
Forget it - I got it working. Not that anyone ever looked at my post
anyway. Not much action occurs on this forum, unlike the rgp, where there is a new post every 2 minutes and people jump to help others out with tech questions. Turns out there are incompatibility issues with the tonearms and the mechs that I am using parts from, an R-84 and an R-87. Either that or the one tonearm was screwed up somehow. They appeared identical, but when I swapped it with the other one it worked, so who knows. As for the right speaker, I said, forget stereo, put the switch to mono, jumpered it off the left, and it's good to go. Simple solutions to vexing problems. Signing off, now..... |
