got a great buy: http://cgi.ebay.com/A-Childs-Garden-...QQcmdZViewItem I wonder how the seller feels about it... Jonathan |

Stevenson on Ebay...
Chris Charles wrote:
Or check his recent sale of Treasure Island... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=7014065 893 I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, an expert on Stevenson's books, but this intrigued me and I did a little research. I found the following dealer comment about a copy of Treasure Island listed with ILAB: "The first edition consisted of 2000 copies, which were issued in four binding orders between 14 November and 11 December 1883. Some copies have ads curiously dated July 1883, while others have ads more properly dated October or December 1883. This copy does have the earliest (July) ads -- though it does not necessarily follow that these were the first bound up. In this copy the "8" is missing from the p. 83 pagination, and the "7" is raised and slightly defective in the p. 127 pagination (both defects are undoubtedly due to type slippage during the 2000-copy printing; there seems to be no correlation between these defects and the ad dates or the cloth colors). Some dealers persist in citing "dead man"s chest" and a few other misspellings as issue points -- which they are not, since every first edition copy has them." Another listing comments: "Treasure Island was published on 14 November 1883, so it is most likely that the first issues had October advertisements (“5R-1083”). Copies are known with July advertisements (“5G-783”), and it is likely that the binder used these when he ran out of the October advertisements. There are also copies known with December advertisements (“5R-1283”)." The advertisements are clearly important in describing what issue of the first edition a copy is, but this seller says that the copy is not bound with the 8 pages of advertisements. How can that be? Even the first issue of 2nd (1884) edition seems to have the 12-83 advertisements. So, how and why is this copy missing the advertisements? Maybe that is why the buyer paid less than ordinary price.
