"Whizzed" Maybe dumb question?
The one frequently used term I have been seeing regarding altered or otherwise
cleaned coins is "whizzed". Is this an electrical or chemical process, or is it just slang for dipped or polished? Thanks in advance for a clarification! Jackson AKA: Jack Grant |

Mechanical. Think "wire brush on a drill"

Thanks for the quick reply! I was wondering as I submitted a Mexican coin to
one of the top grading services that I have had in the vault for 40 years and had purchased from one of the most respected dealers in that area (Neil Utberg). I thot the coin was beautiful and untouched but they bodybagged it as "whizzed". Do they sometimes make mistakes on something like this and should I submit to another service? Thanks again in advance! Jackson |

"Whizzed" is actually a bit more sophisticated than a wire brush on a demel.
You'd actually use different small tips and rubbing compounds, to polish out various areas on a coin. Especially those flat areas to make them shiny or more matte like. Usually you avoid going over any of the designs on a coin and just concentrate on the flat areas. If you look closely at the surfaces with a loupe, you can usually see tiny little scratches (usually circular in pattern) on the coin. This is because they use progressively finer polishing compounds to polish the coin up. But the polishing stops short of touching the detail desgins on the coin. For example a Star, will have a small area aound it that isn't polished. ANACS and some others will slab the coin but they'll note it as being "whizzed" on the label. "Jackson" wrote in message ... Thanks for the quick reply! Thanks for all the help. I just shipped it off to ANACS, so we will see what
happens. There were a lot of bagmarks (it is a 1921 2 Peso), so maybe they were interpreted as whiz marks. Thanks again! Jackson |

A few years ago I sent a 1877 Indian Cent to ANACS, it came back as
"Whizzed". I then sent it to PCGS it came back AU 58. So the answer is YES, the slab companies do make mistakes. (BTW, I did not think it was whizzed) Wes "Jackson" wrote in message ... The old PCI seemed to have problems confusing die polish lines (raised) with
hairline scratches (incuse.) I remember a shipment of early commems where they graded most as AU58 whizzed and ANACS graded them (properly) as MS63 to MS64. -- Frank Provasek Rare Coins www.frankcoins.com Ebay FRANKCOINS Member ANA, Texas Num Assoc, Texas Coin Dealer Assoc. Which company do you think made the mistake? JAM |
