Help needed about a Waterman Safety pen
Hi !
I am not an expert in f.p., surely many people here can answer my question. I have a Waterman Ideal Safety Pen, rather short (8.5 cm, closed). The markings on the body a PAT'D 1884 - MAY 23, 1899 - WATERMAN'S IDEAL FOUNTAIN PEN NY USA - & AUG. 4, 1903 - SAFETY PEN. On the cap: WATERMAN'S PAT PR.28.1903. Does anybody have an idea of its age, and suggest a tentative evaluation ? It has been restored and is in very good condition. Thanks in advance! Hi, Robby,
Your Waterman Safety Pen could not have been made earlier than 1906-07 (1907 is the most likely first year for Waterman Safeties but we don't have enough information to entirely rule out 1906). It could, however, have been made as late as 1942 +/-. You left out the most essential piece of information, however, which is the imprint on the bottom of the knob at the end of the barrel. That information and a few other bits or information will allow me to determine the age of your pen. Does the knob at the end of the barrel have screw threads cut into it so that the cap can screw on over it or is it smooth? Now, hold the uncapped pen steady at eye level with your left hand. With your right (assuming that you're right handed) turn the knob at the bottom of the barrel to extend the nib to writing position. Please tell me whether the nib rises straight up out of the barrel or if it describes a quarter circle arc. Finally, please include the text, in so far as you can read it, of the nib imprint. Each of those bits of information will narrow down the period of manufacture a little although only to a range of years. Take care, Rob Astyk |
