There were a number of different varieties of 50 cent notes made (fractional currency), but your friends note would appear to be the fifth issue. The prices start at about $20 in Very Good condition and go up from there. To answer your questions simply the answers are "yes", I have seen them and "yes" they are valuable. |

Bare Probably what you are referring to is an example of U.S. Fractional Currency. Due to the shortage of coins during the Civil War and just after, Fractional Currency was issued in denominations of 3,5,10,15,25 and 50 cents at various times between 1862 and 1874. Didn't know any was dated 1875 though. I thought the last issue (5th issue) was dated 1874. But I don't collect this stuff so what do I know? Can you post a pic to ABPN or to a web site and give us the url? I would be interested in seeing the note. BTW, 5th issue 50 cent notes are worth anywhere from 3-4 dollars to about $100 depending on condition. -- ©¿©¬ ~ Ed Hendricks ANA# R178621 "Life is a coin. though. I thought the last issue (5th issue) was dated 1874. You are correct in that the Fifth issue is dated 1874, but that was only for the 10 and 25 cents. The only dated 1875 fractional currency is the 50 cent, and is also considered to be Fifth Issue. |
