On topic, regurgitating a Blair post of 2005
for interest in .......[ US meters ]

A slightly different format, the meter is applied to a "stamp"
not to the cover
(1974 Robert Frost Centennial )

(US) Metered Mail Advertising

The (Post Office) Department has approved
the use of metered mail indicia as a means
of private advertising, but the advertising
matter is restricted to the product or service
of the firm holding and using the permit.

This form of advertising has been permitted
in some foreign countries for several years,
but the first I have seen here is a cover
from Steinway & Sons, sent me with the
compliments of Theodore E. Steinway.

This cover bears the customary type of
metered impression with the city name and
paid indicia, but to the left of the former
is an inscription "The Instrument of the
Immortals" and a neat reproduction of a piano.

As an interesting sideline, these new metered
impressions will very likely find many adherents.

Stamps
June 15, 1935

Note: At a recent Nutmeg Stamp Auction,
there was offered a Steinway 3c Violet
Meter impression (Hawkins-Stambaugh type DD1),
International Postal supply Co machine (#5018),
New York City, 4/21/38 with illustrated slogan
for Steinway Pianos, depicting a child at piano.
The estimated price was $20.00

Meter used as a cancel:

When the Scott Base (Ross Dependency of NZ) PO closed in 1987 a meter
facility was made available. Some enterprising folk got the amount set to
zero and used it as a cancel- see:

http://www.100megsfree3.com/glaw/scott/1988%20fish.jpg - a 1988 cover.

Presumably the PO accepted it as legitimate mail.

Otherwise post-closure mail from Scott Base was flown to Christchurch and
cancelled there -

Interesting,

boarding the internet airways,
we now fly over and visit the land of the "pie floater"
here is a meter franking that was banned.
Must be one of the rarest meter frankings.

I feel a Doris Day song coming on................
(from "Annie get your gun" )

"Anything you can do, I can do better"
"I can do anything better than you"
"No you can't!"
"Yes I can!" :0)
