"A stamp collector who spent a decade hunting through more than 100,000
virtually identical little black stamps, looking for the one that would pay
off, sold a strip of three of them on Saturday at a New York auction for
$172,500, including a buyer's premium. The stamps were issued in 1923 as a
memorial to President Warren G. Harding, who had just died in office.
Hundreds of millions of the two-cent stamps were printed. The rare stamps
that were sold an auction have a slightly different spacing of the
perforations along the edges."

Very interesting, thanks Jan!

The stamp was found in 2005, so it had to wait over 70 years to be
discovered. How many others (different) are waiting for us? ;-)

The article says that the collector spent thousand of hours in searching for
perforation varieties, and that he has a collection of over 200 volumes, all
related to the Harding stamp, so that his huge effort was even financially
rewarded. Such a pity that he had to sell it...

In philately, like probably sometimes in golf too, a hole more or less can
make a huge difference, as explained above.

:0)

Indeed, what's a doughnut without the hole?
