Default Keeping track of coins

I am looking for any suggestions of software (Mac OS X 10.3.4) that can
be used to track coins. I have not sold any coins yet, but am
concidering it as I have been accumulating for many years and often
bought more than I needed. So I need a starting point so that I know
what I have and this is why I am looking for a software suggestion. I am
not using anything now and am open to any suggestions. (Please not the
"Get a PC" kind!)
TIA, Bruce

Hi, Bruce.

On the ANA website, the MoneyMarket catalog has several sofware packages
available for collectors:

https://ssl.boulder.net/ana/webstore...862949_129 68

In particular, Coin Keeper Deluxe ($84.95, $74.95 for members) is listed
as being both PC and Mac compatible.

I've been thinking about what I'm going to use to keep track of my
collection, as well, and I've been torn between going with one of these
programs and simply entering my data into MS Access (or Excel, if I want
to get really basic). The advantage of these programs seems to be the
included images of the coins in different grades, but I'm not sure
that's worth the premium, for my money.

I went this same route. When I started, I thought the commercial programs had
to have enhancements, so I bought one and used it for a while.

Over time, I realized that the flexibility of having my own program in
Excel/Access was superior. There are things I want to include (like place of
purchase) that are not in the commercial programs. Some of their features,
like the price updates and grading hints, became useless over time.

Now I do everything in my own Excel files, and find it is much easier and much
better.

Regards,
Tom

Reading and responding to all the posts:

I would keep a portfolio of items held and this by simple item label.

Then I would keep an overall financial result accounting of unrealized
gain/loss combined with realized gain/loss...by each year. (The years can
always be netted with each other.)

Also, I would keep an accounting of realized transactions by item label.

All this in a highly developed financial program.

Finally, detail of what each item label represents can be kept in a simple
spreadsheet.
