I don't think that gold or silver are very nutritious. When the Great
Calamity comes, I'll take something I can eat. If somebody wants to
hoard a lot of pretty rocks, fine, but I doubt they'll be that useful.

Perhaps people who _know_ that the dollar is going to collapse soon,
probably within the next two minutes. This will of course cause bands
of raiders to form, probably within the next three minutes, going
across the countryside like the Vikings did in England, looting and
pillaging in search of fresh water and bread.

Since these modern-day Vikings will not accept our current money,
"real" money will be the only way to prevent them from raping your
women, burning your house down, and stealing the 20,000 gallons of
water and two years of canned goods you've hidden in the basement.
You've hidden them to fight off the mass starvation that will
inevitably occur after the collapse, probably within the next four
minutes.
