Rowe R-83 Amp question
The amp on my R-83 has no volume control. It is always at full volume.
Since this happened right after I broke a component on the pre-amp board, I assume that is my problem. There are 2 small bulbs on the pre-amp board, (DS1 and DS2) very close to the volume connection. I broke the leads off DS2, and need a replacement. I'm not very amplifier literate, so I wonder what these bulbs are used for? It looks like there is about 30 ohms resistance on the bulb. I'd like to fix this quick. Any suggestions on finding a replacement bulb? Thanks |

Thanks this often happens, I used to use the small 12v bulbs on flying leads intended for car stereo systems, but any 12v bulb or thereabouts should do fine. You can also just eliminate the bulbs altogether, just put a wire link in place of them. They were only there to blow, and protect the pre-amp in case a high voltage came down the volume control line. In the 20 odd years I had of operating these kind of Rowe machines - i have never seen bulbs blown from this, usually the leads just fracture or the bulb falls off, just as you have described - as they are mechanically very fragile. in the later model machines - im quite sure bulbs werent used at all. they certainly arent in the CD-100 series. |

Problem solved. Thanks Ken,
I replaced DS1 and DS2 bulbs with two 1819 bulbs that were handy. (rated 28 volts and had 78 ohms resistance). Figured that I should replace both, just in case balance was important. I looked at a newer rowe amp, and as you said, those bulbs are no longer in the circuit. |
