My ISP has announced that in some two or three weeks they are dropping all
Usenet groups from the service package. What sort of access exists when
one's ISP no longer provides access? I'd strongly prefer free access, but
I'm open to a very modest monthly fee if necessary.

Stan,

It seems the US and related providers won't bother much longer with
usenet, due to some US courts rulings about binaries NG's, which are
the major part of the traffic. The same thing is happening in my
country (France), probably not quite the same reasons.

Still, you are lucky that they gave you a warning. Not always the case.

I suggest you google for "free usenet" or "usenet for free" or anything
else along that line.

In the meantime, you may have a look at aioe.org. It's free, probably
with a limitation on the number of posts, but not an overwhelming one.
I suscribed their usenet service, as a spare wheel, and it works rather
smoothly.

Best regards,

Bruno

Hello Stan:

Using your regular browser , you can go to :
http://groups.google.ca/group/rec.co...tamps.discuss/
You will have to register, if you want to post messages, but it is
FREE.
(text only newsgroups - no binaries)

You can also go to http://groups.google.ca/ and select the groups
that you want to participate in. I have been using this for some
years without problem.

Second, if you are a very heavy newsgroup user and use a
newsgroup reader (such as AGENT), then I can recommend
a reliable newsgroup provider , but they charge about $15 US
a month. If you are interested, I will do this by email, offline.
I am not associated with them.

Finally, you should ask your ISP what kind of REBATE
this service reduction entitles you to.

Cheers

As others have commented, you are lucky you have been advised,
mine was just cut without so much as a "by your leave"
Google for free usegroups, and select one that allows you to posts
some only allow you to read.
They are out there but you have to experience some pain finding them.
There is no reason to pay.

I can also recommend one that I use. The basic level, with a bandwidth
cap, is cheaper than $15 -- less than half IIRC. It is more than enough,
by several orders of magnitude, if you are not doing any binary
downloads. Contact me off-list. I also have no association.

Check the survey sites that are out there -- someone recommended Google
"free usenet" as a good search.

Finally, you should ask your ISP what kind of REBATE this service
reduction entitles you to.

Yes, bravo.

Thanks to all. Over the coming weekend I'll explore the suggested options
and choose one or two for use. I'm a frequent reader but an infrequent
poster--perhaps ten to twenty a year at most. The three groups I use are
RCSD, RCSM, and rec.collecting.postal-history, so binaries and great
bandwidth are not a requirement.

Blair--amusing idea but assumedly unproductive to attempt. I had a problem
getting newsgroups about half a year ago. When dealing with my ISP's tech
support group at three increasing levels, the final techie admitted that the
ISP did not support newsgroups but she happened to know a little about them,
but not enough to solve my problem. When coupled with reports from other
RCSS users' reports about ISPs abandoning Usenet, I took that as advance
warning that Usenet was not going to be a long-term service of my ISP.

(The problem was solved by the only suggestion the techie had, delete the
three newsgroups I read, then reload.)

Teranews is free after a one-time signup fee. You are limited to 50 mb
per day, which should not be a problem if you're not into binaries.
Great retention -- over four months on the newsgroups I visit. Teranews
also has other plans with a monthly fee.
