Your example #2 is far from well-documented from contemporary sources (i.e., the story may be a modern fabrication as seemingly nobody cites Peter much before the U.S. Bicentennial or even later) and besides, it was the Gobrecht silver dollar coinage that is typically cited as Peter lived and died in the U.S. Mint in the 1830's, not the 1850's. BTW, it is unlikely that the Bird on display in the Philadelphia Mint today is the actual Peter. Dead bird mounted in 1836??? You gotta take these things with a grain of salt. oly |
