GM Europe: February car sales rise, share slips FRANKFURT (Reuters) - General Motors' (GM) vehicle sales in Europe rose 1.6% in February to over 135,400 units but the U.S. carmaker's market share dipped to 9.1% from 9.2% a year ago, it said on Wednesday. It said Swedish brand Saab had its best-ever February, while its Chevrolet brand boosted sales in Europe by 22.6%. Excluding commercial vehicles, GM Europe had a market share of 9.8% last month, down from 10.0% in February 2005, it said. Passenger car sales for the group's Opel/Vauxhall, Chevrolet, Saab and Cadillac brands rose 1.3% to 123,800 units. German brand Opel and its British sister brand Vauxhall saw February sales decline 2.2% to 95,315 units. Saab, which major GM investor Kirk Kerkorian's representative on GM's board has suggested should be sold, boosted European sales 31% to 5,554 units. Global sales gained 21% to 8,974 vehicles as new models like the 9-3 sports wagon took hold. European sales of South Korean-made Chevrolets advanced 22.6% to 19,660 cars, helped by strong growth in central and eastern Europe, especially Russia, it said. GM sold 258 Cadillacs in Europe last month before the April launch of the BLS model, the first Cadillac built in Europe. No comparative figures were immediately available. Jonathan Browning, GM Europe's head of sales and marketing, highlighted progress at Chevrolet and Saab for volume growth. "For Opel and Vauxhall we have concentrated on improving revenue and product mix, emphasising the quality rather than quantity of sales. This will be the pattern for 2006," he added in a statement. |

Yeah right...Opel's always been a dud. Remember when they tried to
import the Kadette here? What a bomb. A few years after that fiasco you could not drive through a suburban area without seeing them abandoned in people's backyards. Then one night they all disappeared. That Opel GT was not bad looking though and inexpensive to boot. I always liked they way the headlight covers manually went up and down with a big lever. Trouble with all those European imports (Cortina, Opel, Capri, Austin Marina, Simca) was eyecatching advertising and neat packaging coupled with lacklustre dealer servicing after purchase. Especially those sold off the showrooms of the big three. |

I always liked they way the headlight covers manually went up and down with a big lever. snip Although the GT had Detroit-mandated styling, it still had the same mechanical shortcomings as the Kadette. Cute car...for awhile. Over in Europe, VW, Daimler, English Ford and even Fiat were kicking (and still do kick) GM's ass all over the continent. As if Opel/Vauxhall weren't bad enough, now GM is tanking Saab. Funny how the visage of a 1958 Vauxhall just popped into mind...a small car that oddly looked like a scale model of the 1958 Buick Super. In fact, back in those days, Vauxhalls were sold and serviced in the US by Buick franchisees. Trouble with all those European imports (Cortina, Opel, Capri, Austin Marina, Simca) was eyecatching advertising and neat packaging coupled with lacklustre dealer servicing after purchase. Especially those sold off the showrooms of the big three. snip True. I had a fellow I was tutoring for awhile that was very proud of his new Ford Cortina. I think it lasted a total of two years before it became unfeasible to maintain due to a chronic lack of spares in the US. Remember, though, that this was circa 1970, and the only European manufacturer to really have their own dealer network here was VW, and they then, unlike today, had a sterling reputation then for backing their product. The Capri sold in large numbers, and was quite popular, until Ford started screwing it up. The 1971, '72 and '73 Capris were very desireable, and with the same engine as the Pinto, were reliable. Ford's hamfisted approach to meeting emissions standards screwed up all 4 cylinder (and some fo the V6) Ford products, both US and European. By '75, drivability of the Capri earned it the moniker "Crap-ee" here, and sales went down the toilet. One unappreciated Ford import that was a VERY neat car: The Merkur. It was a shame that mutton-headed Ford management screwed that whole program up, as the Merkur was a real contender. Although the Merkur project in the US was very mismanged under Nassar, it was (who else?) Billy Boy Ford who finally killed it off permanently after ousting Nassar. |

Ford also bought out Mazda. The big three OWN the Jappers and Euros. Foreign car companies lick GM's boots like the little worms they are.... |
