CSN problem and coin worth
I'm asking this for my uncle.
Are the coins at www.shopcsntv.com (Cable Shopping Network) a scam or something? Are they (mostly the state quarters) worth the price listed? My uncle purchased some of the coins from the website and he received them in damaged condition. They had big nicks in them, black smudges and paint on them. They had been worn down and warped as if hit with a sledge hammer and stuck in a vise. He tried calling customer service and he can't get a response. He's now trying to get this taken care of through some organization like the BBB or FTC. Has anyone else had a problem with Cable Shopping Network? Also, will the state quarters that everyone seems to be collecting ever be worth more than 25 cents? I have several relatives who are collecting them (because they think they'll be worth something in the future) and I can't see where they'd ever actually be worth something. I don't see the point in collecting them unless it's for fun. |

CSN problem and coin worth
Mike,
I don't know much about the CSN and their coins but my reply is regarding the State Quarters. You are correct in your assumption. They will most likely never be worth anything more that 25 cents or the highest price someone is willing to pay for them as is the case with anything. Think of it this way....if every kid in the 50's kept their Mickey Mantle rookie cards in a special case to ensure its integrity all thinking that it may someday be worth a lot of money.....well you know the outcome...it would not be worth as much as it is today. Coin values (aside from melt price fluctuation) are all based upon population numbers in each respective grade. I myself collect them as well...but only because I think they are cool looking. On a side note I feel that they are the best thing that could have happened to our hobby as it has brought in a whole new generation of collectors. When the kids that collect the state quarters have them all they will most likely move up to a new level. Think of the state quarters as a CC starter kit. I cant wait for the 37 dead president coins to come out in a few years. Ben Mike S. wrote: I'm asking this for my uncle. CSN problem and coin worth
The conventional wisdom is that state quarters will
never be worth more than face because they made so many hundreds of millions of them. More likely, they will be like Morgan silver dollars. There are millions of them out there, but they are so popular that they are collected despite the fact that they are not and never will be scarce. Specialists will focus on tiny differentiations to create artificial scarcity, and sets will still be sought and admired. As long as they remain a popular collectible, they will be bought and sold. Like Morgans, the uncirculated ones will be the only ones that have a slight premium, because worn ones are too common. Regards, Tom |
