Could you please post a scan or a detailed description of the stamp / cancel in question? Thanks Blair After some late night research, I have determinrd that there is no Hong King "IS" cancel. I think that your stamp is upside down. There was a "S1" (S one) cancel, however, used in Shanghai. The treaty ports used Hong Kong stamps. This is a Treaty Port killer cancellation for Shanghai. The Treaty Port Offices were first issued their own cancellers, barred oval 'killers", in 1866. Prior to this (1866) all of their outgoing mail had been cancelled 'B62' in Hong Kong and this practice continued for most of the mail. Only the "loose letters", received after the mail bags had been closed, were canceled with the local 'killers'. With the later introduction of CDS type cancellers, all mail was canceled locally. I have also made the image negative to emphasize the cancel. http://cjoint.com/data/lAgNpsXQVv.htm http://cjoint.com/data/lAgOIx4pVE.htm I hope that this helps. Blair Further reading: Webb, F. W.
